You asked for it. And we listened. We now have patches that will restock for the foreseeable future. After months of sampling, customs completely losing the prototypes twice, two different embroidery machines, and three different trial and error processes… we’re very happy to be launching our brand new morale patches, six in total.

Introducing… the Carryology Classic Collection.

What makes this different than the last several releases of morale patches that sold out in just seconds? We made hundreds upon hundreds of these in the hopes that everyone can score a set… or even two sets if they’d like. And if they do sell out? We’re going to restock them again and again for the foreseeable future. They might eventually be replaced and/or updated someday. But for the meantime, these will be readily available, restocking as necessary. If they happen to be sold out, a new batch should be coming in just a couple weeks!

We kept these patches ultra simple and minimal, while still having some fun with manufacturing. The overall design was inspired by baseball hats and their iconic “3D” raised embroidery. We actually had to use 2 different embroidery machines, with dozens of prototype trials to get the 3D effect we wanted. It was a fine balance between the 3D height while maintaining detail and precision, but we’re stoked with the way they turned out.

Putting it simply, these are raised embroidered thread on a 2”x3” panel, with Velcro on the backside, and two of them glow in the dark.

This concept was born from our Carryology Iceland R&D Expedition. Three members of the Carryology team set out for nearly 2 weeks, 1,400+ miles encircling the entire Ring Road as well as the Westfjords in a boxy Land Rover Defender, jagged black rock mountains and ice blue glaciers with Arc’teryx apparel, and camping under the Northern Lights in Big Agnes expedition tents and toasty warm sleeping bags in sub zero temperatures. Just before the trip, we had some patches made to commemorate the adventure. While we were over there, we had the spontaneous idea to hide 3 patches in some of the most remote areas of the landscape, naming them “Land”, “Sea”, and “Sky” based on their unique locations. We chose the specific hiding spots carefully, as they each required a good bit of effort and planning to claim them from Iceland’s frozen grasp. Then, we recorded GPS coordinates, took photos of the process, and shared the intel with our Carryology Classified Facebook group. Honestly, we expected the 3 patches to sit dormant for many months… possibly years. Well, the first patch “Land” was claimed by JC Canfield just two weeks later. The second patch “Sea”, was claimed by Andrew Cheu 3 months later. And the final patch “Sky” was claimed by Joshua Wong 6 months after it had been placed. We like to have fun and we know you do too. That was the whole purpose… and it was a success. Once the third patch was claimed, we celebrated. But… the fun had ended. So we decided we wouldn’t let the fun stop there.

Introducing the Carryology Global Expedition Project.

Essentially, it’s the same exact concept as our Carryology Iceland R&D Expedition… except this one is worldwide. All seven continents are possible. Maybe even outer space… we’re still working on that one. Along their adventures, members from our Carryology team will place patches around the Earth, record the GPS coordinates, mark the date, provide notes, and upload that to the form you see below. Each patch is numbered: 001-300. Each number will be tied to the exact information from that adventure. Ultimately, the project’s aim is to get folks out into the world, to use their gear, to exploring new places, to make new relationships with strangers who might just become lifelong friends, maybe even finding some calculated danger, and of course… to have some fun.

How do you CLAIM one of these patches?

Enter your info (name and date claimed).
Upload your photo of you claiming the patch at the location.
Simple as that!
From there, your photo and name will forever be logged into the Carryology Global Expedition Project halls of legends.

How do you help PLACE one of these patches?

Our team is small and we can’t cover every inch of the planet on our own… but our Carryology community (that’s you!) spans all 7 continents. Looking at your down in Antartica, Ethan! We’re searching for folks to join our VANGUARD team and help place these along their epic adventures. The more epic the adventure and location, the more likely you are to be selected.

Submit the details of your adventure and tell us why it’s awesome.
Please give us 30-60 days in advance before you depart on your adventure.
If selected, we will contact you via email.
We will then send you TWO patches.
One patch will be labeled “VANGUARD”, which is for you to keep.
One patch will be numbered “XXX”, which is for you to place.
Record the date placed, GPS coordinates, location details, and additional information.
Send us the information and photo promptly so we can get the patch added to the database.

NOTE: We will not be sending out all these patches at once. Wait to be contacted to determine if you have been selected, please do not contact us about the status of your adventure. We are a very small team and we will not be able to reply to all submissions, even though we would love to.

The second installment of our Carryology Artist Series and the second official collaboration with our insanely talented friend, Dan Matsuda.

As a little recap, our first project with Mr. Matsuda (”FALL” CAS01 and ”RISE” CAS02) can be found here in the Design Article. And of course, an interview we did with the man himself from back in 2020. There’s no hiding why we chose to work together again, we’re huge fans and are always in awe of his skill.

Introducing…

Matsuda x Carryology
Carryology Artist Series:
CAS03: UNICORN HUNTER

For the second run of our Carryology Artist Series, we weren’t quite sure where to go right away. Dan’s “FALL” (CAS01) and “RISE” (CAS02) were perfect for 2020 and he captured the concept brilliantly. We thought… What kind of new design or concept can be relevant to both our Carryology team and our Carryology community? Some kind of feeling that is universal. Exciting. Fun.

After quite a bit of back and forth brainstorming, we came up with some really wild concepts (some of which will be activated later). But eventually we landed on our “Hunting A Unicorn” article about the Mystery Ranch Beams Day Assault Pack. Specifically, the feeling the article encompasses; one that Carryologists know too well. All the highs and all the lows, discovering your own personal unicorn, and all the efforts one puts into the pursuit of capturing it. Sometimes it takes weeks. Sometimes it takes years. But the excitement is really in the hunt itself.

Sure, the nickname of the Mystery Ranch x Carryology: Carryology Assault Pack is “Unicorn”. But this patch can represent any product, any mission, any goal. While not limited to, it also includes the MRxC Unicorn too. It’s up to you to decide what your unicorn is. Attach this patch to your pack and let it bring you luck on your hunt.

Next up… we pitched the concept to Dan. And we wanted to let him run wild on what the term “Unicorn Hunter” meant to him. How did he envision the concept? We threw out a few different favorites for styling inspiration… surely a few of you out there will love some of these classics that we pitched. He-Man and She-Ra, Genesis Survivor Gaiarth, Princess Mononoke, Starchaser The Legend of Orin, and several others.

(((PLACEHOLDER FOR WHERE THE SKETCHES IMAGES WILL GO)))

After a few concept revisions with the mysterious Unicorn Hunter character, their gear, and their posing/stance, Dan had it dialed in perfectly. But we weren’t over the hill quite yet. Due to the incredible amount of detail in the illustration… we’d have to make the patch absurdly huge (like 5″+) or find a way to capture the detail with a high-thread stitch count.

Our man Greg Li from Suburban stepped in and assured us he could crush it. While it did take about 3 different attempts, each one increasing the thread count (as well as the machine time), we finally landed on a detailed threaded patch that captured the vision and detail of Dan’s illustration. For those of you who dig technical specs, this 12-head Barudan embroidery machine ran at 850 spm (stitches per minute), with 32,000+ total individual stitches on every single patch.

It’s officially here…

It’s been just a bit over 6 months since we’ve launched our last batch of Morale Patches. And a whole lot has happened since then, including; the end of 2021, the Carry Awards, an epic adventure over to Iceland. Our last release included 2 different patches, rounding out the Firefly Collection with P09 and P10, respectively. And now… we’ve got 3 new patches to kick off a brand new family of Carryology Morale Patches.

We’re calling this new collection; the Signal Collection.

While we do have plenty of mockups created and a solid plan to expand upon this collection, there are no guarantees on how many will fill this specific family before it ends. Maybe only these 3 before we try out something else? Maybe it will go to a nice even 10 units again? Who knows. Regardless… you’ve been asking us for more patches and here they are!

Introducing… the Signal Collection!

P11: Signal X-Pac Black
P12: Signal X-Pac Orange
P13: Signal “Lucky Thirteen”

Signalling The Message

To kick off this new family of patches, we wanted to go classic. Sure, we have some other non-logo designs in the works. Some are actually pretty wild! But these designs in the Signal Collection should be iconic and impactful. Just like the bright, bold, and colorful inspiration behind the collection’s name… which is both a noun and a verb. To signal or signaling is the act of conveying information and the signal can also be the actual physical object used to convey information.

Two great examples below. First, the flag semaphore system which uses brightly colored flags to communicate messages (the original concept was developed by the Ancient Greeks, with flaming towers placed many miles apart from one another). Side note, whenever I see flag semaphores being used, it always reminds me of Wes Anderson’s movies for some reason. Anyway., The second example, is the art of using Morse Code via light bursts from a signal lamp for naval signalling (pioneered by the Royal Navy in the 19th century).

We like history. We like storytelling. This has both!
And so it would be; the Signal Collection.

We had to have some fun with Lucky Number 13 in the collection of Carryology Morale Patches. Personally, I’ve always wanted a murdered-out all-black Carryology patch. In the past, I’ve even “custom made” my own blacked out Carryology patches using black paint pens. No more of that. It’s official, black on black is here.

It’s official… these two are the very last of the Firefly Collection.

Being that these will be the last two Fireflies and they happen to perfectly round out the 10-piece collection numerically, we wanted to do something special to celebrate that. Including bringing a design back from its grave.

Introducing… the Firefly Final Collection!

P09: Firefly X-Pac Black “Yin”
P10: Firefly MultiCam Alpine “Yang”

We’ve been hinting at this one in our online community forum (click here to join our Carryology Classified group on Facebook) for quite some time now. Images of yin yangs, light and dark, alpine scenes, and more. The hints kept coming… because, well… we had to bring a design back from its grave, which took a bit of extra development and testing time.

These are officially the last two in the Firefly Collection, hence the name of this Firefly Final Collection release. We’ll still do more patches, of course. But the Firefly Collection will now be complete with these final two designs. The “Firefly” designation is determined by a laser-cut nylon upper with the classic Carryology script wordmark logo and a lower made from reflective material.

The Final Final Final release of the Firefly

Yeah yeah yeah, ok, you got us. We know, we know! We genuinely thought P05-P08 would be the last of the Firefly Collection. The problem is, little did anyone know that P02-P04 (Firefly Multicam Collection – SOLD OUT)… was actually planned to be P02-P05… with one additional MultiCam pattern. Many clever readers caught on and asked us where the MultiCam Alpine was, as the 3 most popular MultiCam patterns were missing their frozen arctic sibling. P05 was originally supposed to be Firefly MultiCam Alpine.

Maybe “supposed to be” isn’t the best wording… because we prototyped and manufactured several hundred units of the never-released P05: Firefly MultiCam Alpine for the MultiCam Collection. And then we threw every single last one of the MultiCam Alpine patches into the trash. Yes, straight to the trash.

Why would we do that? There’s a great discussion here if you want to dig into it. But, ultimately, because at the 11th hour, we took a close look at those P05 MultiCam Alpine production units… and they just didn’t pass our in-house quality control standards, no matter how much we wanted them to. So we made the extremely difficult decision to not have them released out into the world. The orange 3M reflective backing shined through the MultiCam Alpine far too much, making the brilliant white arctic camo appear to be some strange muted peachy pink. It’s no one’s fault. It’s just how physics, light, and colors work. Regardless, we just couldn’t do it. So we decided that we would hold off on MultiCam Alpine until we could find a better solution. Well, we did. And now it’s here.

But we couldn’t stop there. We couldn’t JUST release a single white camo patch. Frankly, we wanted two patches to numerically bookend the Firefly Collection to a nice even number 10. Ending the Firefly Collection at number 9 felt a bit too weird. So what could it be? We had MultiCam Alpine in 500D Cordura nylon with 3M Scotchlite black reflective behind it. It needed something to balance it. The next design should be a yang to this design’s yin. We had already used MultiCam Black (P03), so going 100% literal here wasn’t the move. We realized we could use a different material entirely, as with yin/yang it’s not supposed to be the exact same, but the opposite. So we selected a Carryology favorite, X-Pac, in black. And to push it further out into “equal opposite territory” we opted for an X-Pac using ripstop in the face fabric, for some extra visual flair. It would be made from Dimension Polyant X-Pac VX21RS with 3M Scotchlite white reflective behind it. As “yin” = dark and “yang” = light, they would be named and numbered accordingly, with the darkness first and the light being second. P09: light emerging from the darkness. P10: darkness emerging from the light. Balance achieved.

If you’re reading this, you’re likely no stranger to Dimension Polyant’s X-Pac family, available in a wide array of options to cover almost any use case imaginable. Originally designed for sails on high performance racing sailboats, X-Pac fabric is strong, lightweight, has extremely minimal stretch, and is laminated with a 0.25 millimeter PET film which makes it waterproof.

MultiCam Alpine™ (or “MCA”) was designed to effectively reduce the visual and rear-IR signature of a person operating in snow-covered environments. Out of the 5 different MultiCam patterns, MCA offers the boldest visual pop, which is why we love using it.

The very last of “Firefly Collection”?
As promised, more patches! This Firefly Rare Camo Collection in particular took quite a bit of extra effort, but we think it was definitely worth it now that we finally have them in hand.

Introducing… a collection of rare camouflage!

P05: Firefly M81 US Woodland
P06: Firefly M90 Swedish
P07: Firefly Tigerstripe
P08: Firefly DPCU Auscam

Firefly Rare Camo collection inspiration

Plaid, a pile of leaves, a tiger in the grass, and jellybeans?
What could all of this mean?

This was the clue we shared in our private community group on Facebook, Carryology Classified. Each photo represents a camo pattern and each pattern would be utilized on its own Firefly patch design.
You’ll find the answers to each photo clue in the sections below.

Carryology morale patch

The Final Release of the Firefly Collection?

Yep, that’s the official plan. We’ll still do more patches, of course. But the Firefly Collection will now be complete with these final four designs in the Firefly Rare Camo collection. The “Firefly” designation is determined by a laser-cut nylon upper and a lower made from orange 3M Diamond Grade DG3 Reflective.

Because of these being the last pieces to complete the Firefly puzzle, we wanted these last 4 to be very special. For the first 4 patches in the Firefly Collection, we went all 500D Cordura nylon: in an iconic black colorway (P01– SOLD OUT) and then 3 patterns from the incredible MultiCam® camouflage family (P02, P03, and P04 – SOLD OUT). Of course, there’s an entire world of camo patterns out there… from different times in history and from different countries/regions across the globe. We compiled a dream list of our 4 favorite patterns, regardless of their era, location, or difficulty to find them.

Well, that’s easier said than done. You’ll notice it’s been 2 months since our last patch release. That’s because we’ve been busy digitally searching warehouses around the world for NOS (new old stock) rolls or scrap yardage of these rare fabric patterns that have been hiding away or that time has forgotten. Thanks to some great friends and a whole lot of digging, we were able to find some of these tucked away. Special shout-out to a great friend of Carryology, Spencer McDonald, who secured us some genuine Auscam (his own!) from Australia. Long story short, as simple as this may seem… this was no small task.

P05: Firefly M81 US Woodland

M81 US Woodland (AKA “God’s Plaid) was created for the United States Armed Forces all the way back in 1981. For many, this is the ultimate camouflage pattern, hence its mighty and bold nickname. This is the camo most of us know from cult classic 1990s movies and even on toy action figures. Simply put, this is one of the most iconic camouflage patterns in the history of camouflage.
Photo clue answer: Plaid = “God’s Plaid” = Nickname for M81.

P06: Firefly M90 Swedish

M90 (AKA “the leaf pile”) hails from our friends in the north, the Swedes. Used today by the Swedish Armed Forces, it was actually developed in the 1970s for military vehicles. Since then, its fractured iconic look has been scaled down and copied widely on a commercial level. It was only last year, in 2020, that the country of Sweden actually copyrighted the design, making it uniquely their own… and even more difficult to source.
Photo clue answer: Pile of leaves = “The leaf pile” = Nickname for M90.

NOTE: Due to its rarity and difficulty sourcing this fabric, there is an extremely limited amount available!

P07: Firefly Tigerstripe
P07: Firefly Tigerstripe

Carryology Morale Patch
P07: Firefly Tigerstripe

Tigerstripe is a unique and mysterious one. Its history isn’t quite as linear or clear as some of the other official government-approved armed forces patterns. Tigerstripe can be traced back to the French military who fought in Vietnam. After they left, the Vietnamese military adopted the pattern. Later, the US sent in advisors who worked with the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, who were wearing the pattern. Because of this partnership, certain groups in the US military were approved to wear this camo. But, it was only the best of the best: SEALs, Green Berets, and other elite forces. It became synonymous with “badass”.

Carryology Morale Patch
P08: Firefly DPCU Auscam

DPCU Auscam (or “jellybean camo” or “hearts and bunnies”) is a special one for us. Auscam is short for “Australian camouflage” as it’s used by, you guessed it… Australian Defence Force. Carryology was founded in Australia, after all. Think, if M81 is the iconic camo pattern for the US, this is the Australian equivalent. The Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniform was developed in the 1970s and has since been replaced by the modern MultiCam pattern, leaving this one longingly loved and remembered.
Photo clue answer: Jellybeans = “Jellybean camo” = Nickname for Auscam.

The Wonder of MultiCam

Of course, if we were going to go with camouflage, the first type or style we’d use would be genuine MultiCam®. The seven-color MultiCam pattern was developed in 2002 by the genius minds at Crye Precision in conjunction with the United States Army Soldier Systems Center. This revolutionary camouflage pattern was designed for use in varied environments, seasons, elevations, and light conditions.

Its patterns take advantage of the way the human eye and brain take in shape, volume, and color. Since only a very small portion of the human eye perceives color, the brain does a lot of ‘filling in’ for the eye. The high resolution of MultiCam® takes advantage of this principle and helps the observer to ‘see’ the pattern as part of the background, allowing soldiers and their gear to blend in and stay safe.

In short: camouflage science is awesome!

MultiCam® (or “MC”) was the original first of the five patterns in the MultiCam pattern family, designed to be the most adaptive for the most common battle environments. This is why MultiCam has seen such success via the use of military units around the world. It’s the classic, it’s the icon.

MultiCam Black™ (or “MCB”) was developed to be used by top-tier law enforcement and special forces in the military. Frankly, this one looks badass. It’s camo, it’s black, it’s awesome. This particular MC family variant is arguably the most popular of the five patterns when it comes to civilian use.

One patch design is light.

One patch design is dark.

One patch is inspired by the West.

One patch is inspired by the East.

An equal opposite balance.

Yin and Yang.

When the two patches are displayed next to each other, as intended, they visually interact. The characters and beasts are riding towards each other, towards battle, or maybe towards peace. Or maybe both at the same time. Or maybe on different timelines.

On the Carryology Assault (AKA “Unicorn”)…

The Carryology Assault gets its simplified nickname “Unicorn” from the most prominent feature on the patch.

We have a medieval (1) Knight riding a (2) Unicorn, holding a (3) Holy Grail, with a shield made of (4) Unobtanium.

All four of these items come from Western culture.

Symbolism:

1. Knight:

Legendary warrior from the West. This character is the only “real” thing of these four items, as documented throughout history.

2. Unicorn:

Famous mythological creature from the West. Believed by some to be real, proof of this animal’s existence has never been presented. No bones, no photos, nothing. Yet some still believe these creatures are out there.

3. Holy Grail:

This blurs the lines between reality, fiction, and the gods. It was believed to and still is believed to exist. People searched their entire lives to find this, yet there is limited evidence to prove its existence. To those who believe, it exists because of their belief in it.

4. Unobtanium:

The human creation of a thing which can never be attained, the embodiment of “impossible to acquire”. A humorous term coined by aerospace engineers for materials that they wished for but did not exist on the periodic table. Today, gear hunters use this term, relating to the gear which they cannot find, but continue to search for.

On the No Escape (AKA “Dragon”)…

The No Escape gets its simplified nickname “Dragon” from the most prominent feature on the patch.

We have an ancient (1) Samurai warrior atop a (2) Dragon, holding a uniquely-shaped (3) Sword, with a (4) Five-Colored Jewel.

All four of these items come from Eastern culture.

Symbolism:

1. Samurai:

Legendary warrior from the East. This character is the only “real” thing of these four items, as documented throughout history.

2. Dragon:

Famous mythological creature from the East. Believed by some to be real, proof of this animal’s existence has never been presented. No bones, no photos, nothing. Yet some still believe these creatures are out there.

3. Sword:

This blurs the lines between reality, fiction, and the gods. It was believed to and still is believed to exist. It is called Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi (“Grass-Cutting Sword”) and it is one of three items of the Imperial Regalia of Japan. These three items are kept in three different locations across Japan and are covered from view and heavily guarded. This particular sword was believed to have been discovered by Susanoo (god of storms and seas) after defeating an eight-headed serpent and finding the sword in one of its tails.

Since then, it has been passed down the line of Japanese Emperors. Since 690, the three items (including this sword) have been presented to the Emperor during the enthronement ceremony. This ceremony is not public, and these items are by tradition seen only by the Emperor and certain priests. Because of this, no known photographs or drawings exist. Two of the three treasures (the jewel and the sword), as well as the Privy Seal and State Seal, were present at the abdication of Emperor Akihito on 30 April 2019. Akihito’s successor, Naruhito, formally took possession of them in a brief ceremony on 1 May 2019. Prior to these events, they were last in public during the accession and enthronement of Akihito in 1989 and 1990. On all of these occasions, they remained shrouded from view in packages or boxes the entire time.

No living human has ever seen these items. There is much speculation as to the actual origins of these items, what they actually look like, and whether they actually even exist at all.

4. Five-Colored Jewel:

From a 9th-century Japanese folklore story called “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”. The story goes that a poor old man (a bamboo harvester) and his wife discovered a tiny baby infant inside a glowing stalk of bamboo. They took the tiny infant and raised her as their very own daughter and named her Kaguya-hime (“Shining Princess of the Young Bamboo”). Later, they realize, because of her, every time he cuts a stalk of bamboo, there is a nugget of gold inside. The family becomes rich and the old man tries to keep Kaguya-hime a secret from the outside world. But quickly, the tale of her beauty and her abilities make its way across the land, bringing five suitors to ask for her hand in marriage.

However, Kaguya-hime is not interested in any of these suitors. She gives each suitor an incredible quest. If they can achieve this task, they can have her hand in marriage. However, what they did not know is that each task she had given them was entirely impossible to achieve.

One of these five tasks given to a suitor was to bring her a five-colored jewel from a dragon’s neck. The driving motivation keeps the individual searching for eternity, despite never being able to acquire it. Do dragons even exist? Where do they live? How would one go about finding a dragon? If one were to somehow find a dragon… would it be the specific dragon that wears a five-colored jewel around its neck? And finally, how would one even remove the jewel from a mighty dragon’s neck? Rarer than rare, this item does not even exist.

Knight & Samurai.

Unicorn & Dragon

Holy Grail & Sword.

Unobtanium & Five-Colored Jewel.

Note: We worked closely with our friend Alexander Ryu Long (born, raised, and living in Japan) to help select these symbols in order to tell this story through imagery on this No Escape morale patch. Fun fact, his name “Ryu” actually means “Dragon” in Japanese. Thank you, Alexander! Illustration work performed by the incredibly talented Hadrien Monloup (one of the founders of Carryology, among a dozen other hats he wears). Thank you, Hadrien!
