TNF offers considered additions to the ski and running scene, including some ultralight trail runner packs and carry features such as quick-access skin pockets, ski carry, a harness bottle pocket and soft trico accessory pockets. Sizes vary from 20L to 30L and 50L and the fabric is 70D to help keep you fast and on track. They’ve also added the Skiddlyskatscoot, a sidecountry ski pack for those who keep it chill on the mountain and like long witty names.

With success from their Crag series BD have added the Creek Transit 22 and 32 to the line with more of a commute focus for a fun day of work and play. The Father of Fellwalking

The Lake District has arguably some of the best walking landscapes in the world. A bold claim perhaps, but one that is hard to dispute after meandering along the numerous trails, ascending the hills and mountains of the region, and taking in the spectacular views.

Alfred Wainwright is a key figure in the history of fellwalking (essentially hill and mountain walking), and has passed his love of the fells onto a worldwide audience with his popular guidebooks. He documented 214 fells (known as the Wainwrights) in his seven-volume A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. “Bagging” Wainwrights is a popular challenge amongst fellwalkers, with some even managing to complete all 214.

The Prize

To honor Wainwright in suitable fashion, Lake District-based Millican have partnered with diverse makers from across the UK to create a durable bag that will embrace the fells with enthusiasm, letting you roam in the footsteps of Wainwright with your adventure essentials in tow.

Crafted by hand in the UK, the Wainwright x Millican Pack features an exterior made of 12oz canvas from Dundee-based Halley Stevensons. Harris Tweed from the Isle of Lewis forms the lining, while the vegetable-tanned leather is sourced from Italy and dyed in the UK. Each pack is made by hand in Sheffield, with a limited edition batch of 100 in total produced.

The pack offers two exterior expandable pockets secured with stained wood buttons, plus an exterior bottle pocket. There are also two interior pockets, as well as an interior padded compartment that fits a 15″ laptop. The pack includes a leather grab handle, leather yokeback patch, and adjustable padded shoulder straps.

Millican, the change of pace kings based in the Lake District in lovely England have a new range of bags known as the Maverick Collection. Based on their heritage of being influenced by the maverick himself, Millican Dalton, the bags are built from eco-friendly materials and embrace one of the best eco practices around, making stuff that is used well, lasts well and will survive the test of time.

The result is a group of clean and understated bags made of Bionic canvas, metal hardware and a minimum of seams to reduce wear and any potential of failure.

Millican have been covered here on Carryology before. I have reviewed one of their earlier pieces, an organic cotton writer’s bag. Their newer product is tighter and feels like a great selection of fit for purpose materials and constructions. For this Drive By, we got behind the wheel of the Millican Smith the Roll Pack 25L.

Who It Suits

Simply put, the bag’s fabric looks awesome. It is matt finish with added texture and a natural dual tone to the color. This gives the base fabric an interesting blend of technical and heritage tones. The bags are all monocolored and minimal on the branding details, so they have a touch of sophistication to them that pulls them into a more everyday appropriate range of outdoor gear.

Who It Doesn’t

I was using the 25L version of the pack and the main point to consider is that if you are wanting to use this as a city commute bag you are carrying a lot of webbing straps and external storage pockets. The end result is that it is slightly too busy to fit well into an office environment. I think that the minimalism of the Smith the Roll Pack 18L would be better suited to this environment, as it has just one webbing loop/clip to deal with.

Design

The main closing G-hook was great; it slides easily into a leather loop that is part of the top grab handle.

The G-hooks and webbing are all excellent quality. The thing that makes this bag great is the body fabric; it is a cotton, recycled polyester and high tensile polyester blend which feels tough, natural and semi-technical. A large part of the bag is unlined and it does not need to be due to the well-balanced stiffness/softness of the canvas.

Alternatives To Consider

Verdict

I really like the bag but feel that I don’t love it. Why?

It all depends on what you are after. I don’t need as much side storage as the bag offers. After using the pockets they push out and don’t quite go back, meaning you have some large pockets muddying up the silhouette. It’s not an issue if you are using this as an outdoor bag, but if you are trying to ‘dress it up’ for a meeting or office it is very difficult. This is compounded by having G-hooks and webbing hanging from lots of spots.

That and dealing with a G-hook hidden under the flap of my most frequently accessed pocket.

The materials are great, the comfort is good, and the story and overall feel of the bag is awesome. I would recommend considering the trade-offs between a cleaner pack, such as the Smith 18L, and the advantages of more organization from the Smith 25L.

Superb craftsmanship, with worksmanship and materials guaranteed for life. Pretty rad, right? With its distinct design, the Jensen stands out wherever it’s used. Three sections in the main pack provide organized storage, while a number of external attachment points let you carry extra gear as needed. Still as striking as when it first came out, this is a great option if you dig the heritage vibe but want something a little different.

Topo Designs Klettersack

Topo know how to do right by the heritage scene, crafting the Klettersack as a hard-working pack that will do double duty on the trails and the city streets. The construction is solid, with 1000D Cordura and leather lash tabs for external carry. A slim profile keeps things compact when you’re out and about and there’s a choice of 15L and 22L versions to suit your needs.

Gregory Kletter Day

This pack is all about stylish simplicity. If you like your bags with organization, this isn’t for you. However, if you love beautiful silhouettes with durable materials and hardware and attractive colorways, this is a fine choice.

Topo Designs Daypack

A balance of function and form makes this a great piece for work and play. A sleek profile in a variety of colorways, along with a mix of pockets to keep your gear organized, means this pack can handle itself in the city. When it’s time to venture further afield, there’s enough space and external attachment points to carry your exploring essentials while staying light on your feet.

Archival Roll Top

This pack ticks plenty of boxes, from style to build and versatility. The water-resistant waxed twill construction keeps the contents safe from the elements, while the roll-top format lets you expand or shrink the bag’s size as needed. Internal and external pockets help keep your bits and pieces in order and the clean, attractive design looks equally good in the office or taking in nature.

Archival Rucksack

A handsome combination of waxed cotton twill and Horween Chromexcel leather keeps this pack looking classy in urban and outdoor environments alike. REI Flashback Pack

Forget all those superfluous design elements. This bag is a firm believer in keeping things simple. The interior of the pack has a zipped pocket and a sleeve for a tablet or hydration bladder. On the outside a lash tab, ice axe loop and shoulder strap loops let you haul extra items. Rounding things off is a tough construction that will withstand frequent use. Even better? It won’t strain your bank balance either.

Tanner Goods Wilderness Rucksack

Who knew a combination of waxed 18 oz. filter twill canvas, quality wool felt, Horween Rich Chromexcel leather and brass hardware could look so good? Well, apparently Tanner Goods. If you can snap yourself out of staring at it admiringly, you’ll find it doesn’t skimp on the functionality either. A laptop sleeve, pockets for your smaller carry items and a tough construction that’s built to last ensures you’ll get plenty of use out of this beauty for years to come.

Azo Equipment Bashilo

The Bashilo has understated heritage style in spades, along with a variety of handy features. Its 25-liter volume offers plenty of space for your daily carry, with a weather-resistant construction that merges British waxed cotton and vegetable-tanned leather into a harmonious whole.
