When QWSTION unveiled their new Bananatex fabric earlier in the year it was one of the most impressive textile developments

When QWSTION unveiled their new Bananatex fabric earlier in the year it was one of the most impressive textile developments to hit the carry world in quite some time. The banana plant fabric makes real improvements over current organic materials both in terms of function and minimising environmental impact. To launch this new super material the team designed two brand new bags showcasing the same level of commitment to sustainability, the Hip Pouch and the Roll Pack. Both styles take a minimalist approach, stripping back the design to its bare essentials in order to reduce environmental impact both in production and at end of life. The challenge for the team was to strike the right balance, the sweet spot of form and function. I was lucky enough to be able to test out the Roll Pack for the last couple of months to see if QWSTION had reached carry zen.

Specifications

Name: Roll Pack

Brand: QWSTION

Format: Rolltop backpack

Measurement:  44cm x 31cm x 14cm

Capacity: 20L

Weight: 1kg

Material: Bananatex

PriceUS$ 490

Who It Suits

The Roll Pack is an urban all-rounder. Good for daily commuting to the office, school or university. It’s modern vibe nails the problem zone of when you need a bag that’s both professional and casual. And it’s minimal and versatile enough to wear on the weekends without feeling like you’re at work.

Who It Doesn’t

With such a simple design I’m sure everybody would find this pack useful in some way, however it’s simplicity will be an issue if you’re looking for uber functionality. If you are someone who likes to be very compartmentalised then this is not the pack for you. Likewise if you tend to over pack or need heavy gear on a daily basis then this pack might not have enough support.

Looks

As a brand QWSTION are rooted in Swiss modernist design tradition – following classic design principles of form follows function. Their process involves prototyping and testing ideas in house, slowly evolving the shape to meet the desired function. The Roll Pack is one of their more unique creations and it’s striking in its minimalism. It’s a super sharp looking bag and at first I was slightly intimidated by it, especially in stark white. My wardrobe isn’t quite as progressive and I had doubts I couldn’t pull off the look. But it didn’t take long for me to realise I had nothing to worry about, the bag looks effortlessly cool and it’s clean facade means it never clashes with what you’re wearing.

Construction

An added benefit of super minimalist design is that it allows designers to obsess over every minor detail and you can tell the team at Qwstion took their time on this pack. Every cut and stitch feels carefully considered. The pattern is zero waste which means there are no fabric off-cuts after production. The leather handles are made from a single folded piece. And the base is formed with a clever box fold. Qwstion have even developed their own circular alternative to the ubiquitous box stitch. All these small elements come together to give a casual yet strong feeling, like a well crafted pair of jeans. Given the simplicity of the design and build quality there really isn’t much that can fail on the pack, so with care it should last you well into your old age.

Materials

A subtle but significant achievement of the design is how few materials are used. There are five materials total, which is half that of even a simple school backpack. This might sound simple but it’s takes real commitment to design with such restraint. The pack, straps and pocket details are all made from Bananatex. If you haven’t read it already all the fabric details are covered in our previous piece, but let me just say again that it’s such a great bag fabric. Since that article was written the pack has survived a few months of bike commuting, often in rain, and it’s still looking great. The Roll Pack also features a merino wool felt liner which acts as both structural support and padding for your back and laptop. The felt wraps around the base to protect the bottom edge of the lappy, and whilst at first I was a little nervous packing my 15” macbook pro I’ve not had any worries since. The handles and zip pulls are built with a combination of veg-tan leather and custom aluminum g-hooks which combine to give the pack a definite touch of class. The g-hooks are particularly nice and are used across the bag in a number of functions, even to adjust the backpack straps. The metal zip is perhaps the weakest element of the bag. It’s not a poor quality zip, more that the rest of the components are at such a high level. Even here though the team sourced a specialty cotton zip tape. Another result of this clever use of materials is an easily managed end of life. Once the pack does finally reach that point, it’s parts can be easily separated and sorted into either the recycling or compost.

Features

For such a simple, single compartment pack there are a number of subtle details that make the pack quite smart. For example the top opening hardware allows you to configure the pack four different ways depending on the mission. For quick trips you can use it as a simple flapped pack. The full roll-top (either front or back roll) adds more security and weatherproofing, or you can attach the hooks to the grab handle to create a tote pack. The same handle can also be attached to the side loops to convert the pack into briefcase mode. Once inside the pack there is a rear laptop compartment as well as three slip pockets. Cleverly, the slip pockets have been designed to allow access either from the top or side through the quick access side zip.

Performance

As someone with a super variable work day the roll pack has been up to the task and even solved a few small but significant problems. Like those times when you don’t need to take much to a meeting, the simple pattern combined with roll top means that it naturally expands and compresses really neatly. I’ve never run out of room, but as importantly it also never felt too big. So even with just a couple of loose items the roll pack still looks great. And it’s simplicity also makes the pack a social chameleon, you can go from a corporate office to a grubby bar and the bag never feels out of place.

With only four pockets for organization packing does take some thought. If you tend to have smaller items stashed into pouches it’s less of an issue, but if you’re someone who is used to Samsonite levels of office organisation you will need to adjust your packing style. Also the lack of any small external pockets means you’ll want any quick-grab items packed near the side zip. I once was caught out packing my wallet in a difficult place and ended up having to unpack everything on the street. I quickly learnt to take a little bit more time packing my bag and I rarely have any issues now.

With a 5kg load of laptop, cables, water and lunch the pack is easily comfortable enough for a day about town. My casual half hour ride to the office is no problem. If you are planning on a much longer or more active commute the light back padding and lack of ventilation may become an issue. Also if you’re a super commuter who packs heavy you might find that the straps don’t provide enough padding. On the few times I needed to overstuff I would have liked slightly wider, more comfortable straps. And the g-hook strap adjustment system doesn’t allow for small adjustments which again doesn’t suit big loads or long hikes.

The first iteration of Bananatex has a natural beezwax finish for waterproofing. When you combine that with the roll-top closure the pack is considerably weatherproof. So far no rain has made it’s way into the pack after a few decent showers. The side zip will leak in very heavy rain so it’s up to you to assess the risk before trekking into a storm.

Alternatives to Consider

If you’re after a roll top or messenger style pack with a similar vibe there is the Trakke Assynt, or the Bedouin Delireis. Or if you’re searching for bags with environmental credentials I really like  Freitag and Mafias use of post consumer waste. Recently a lot more packs using sustainable fabrics have been hitting the market. Some of these are more legitimate than others so make sure you read the fine print to see what the fabric is and how it’s actually made.

THE GOOD

    • Bananatex, it’s a great fabric and might even save the world

    • Looks great, can’t believe how many compliments I got

  • Build quality is awesome,

THE NOT SO GOOD

    • It’s minimalist organisation can be inconvenient at times (but I guess that’s the point)

    • Can be uncomfortable with bigger loads

  • The quick access side zip is a little clunky

Verdict

If you happened to stumble upon the Qwstion Roll-Pack out of context it’s possible you’d not be impressed. The bag has a reasonable price tag and nothing about it screams innovation. It’s not until you view it though a sustainable lense that you get a strong appreciation of the thought and care behind every detail. It designed with a fundamentalist approach to better environmental practices. And using it daily for the last few months has felt like I’ve been on a health kick. At first I was super enthusiastic, I would tell anyone who’d listen about the virtues of Bananatex. Then every now and then the small inconveniences frustrated me and I considered going back to my old ways. It was in those moments that trying to do better became a conscious choice. And like a successful health kick, using the pack did make me look and feel better.

The Cognac leather with red lining makes a comeback and a chic Navy leather with orange lining has been introduced.

They’re breaking out the good champagne at QWSTION HQ, and the Swiss-based brand have a lot to celebrate. Firstly, this October marks the brand’s 10th anniversary. 2018 also marks an environmental milestone with the brand switching all external fabrics to certified organic, a huge effort in terms of sourcing and certification. But perhaps the most exciting announcement was yesterday’s release of a new shell fabric dubbed Bananatex®, a unique banana-based material that promises to be the most sustainable bag fabric yet. According to Christian Kaegi, co-founder and Creative Director, “We are super excited about the launch of our Bananatex® collection, as it’s the culmination of several years of research and development. It’s so difficult nowadays to deliver true innovation – with this we knew we were on to something.” Amongst all the festivities Christian took time to sit down for a chat, share the details of their new fabric, and ponder if bananas can save the world.

One of QWSTION’s defining traits has been their commitment to organic materials, a decision the brand made at the very beginning. The group were searching for a path towards a truly sustainable product, one that factored in the entire product life cycle. Christian and the team took a pragmatic view of the situation, “So long as there is no effective end-of-life strategy for synthetic materials, natural fibers are going to be more environmentally friendly”. Theoretically synthetics can exist in a closed loop with old fabric being recycled into new, but for now natural fabrics have a more established loop. Plants provide a renewable source of material that is able to return to the earth to complete the cycle. The production of natural fibers also produces less emissions and plants even convert carbon dioxide back into oxygen. Whilst the environmental justification was there, the choice to go natural organic was a brave one considering that good-quality nylon is both stronger and cheaper than cotton. Here Christian and the team again questioned the norm, “Sure tech fabrics will always be stronger than an organic material, and can maybe last for 100 years, but is that really necessary?”

QWSTION Bananatex

A major environmental concern for the majority of natural fibers available is their reliance on large quantities of fertilisers and pesticides to produce high yields. These practices have been linked to a range of environmental issues including water pollution and health problems for farmers. As a countermeasure QWSTION set about developing a shell fabric made from certified organic cotton. However, cotton is generally grown to produce short fibers for soft t-shirts, which isn’t ideal for durable structured pack cloth. Whilst working with a fabric mill to solve that puzzle, the team were introduced to the Abacá plant, a member of the banana family. Christian says right away the plant had two promising characteristics.

QWSTION Bananatex

Firstly the cultivation of Abacá is almost wild. Commercial growing in the Philippines looks more like a jungle than a farm. As the plant thrives within a natural ecosystem there is no use of pesticides or irrigation, and according to Christian, Abacá has even contributed to reforestation efforts in the Philippines. The farming also has a positive social impact in line with QWSTION’s ethical production values. Secondly, and as important, the fiber from the plant was long and strong. This gave it the potential to make a great pack cloth.

QWSTION Bananatex

Abacá is by no means a new fiber; it’s been grown commercially since at least the 1500s. Before the rise of synthetic fibers it was commonly used around the world in the form of ropes and basic cloth; these days it’s used mainly to produce tea bag paper. The innovation that took QWSTION three years was in evolving the end product from the primitive to the technical.

“The cultivation of Abacá is almost wild. Commercial growing in the Philippines looks more like a jungle than a farm. As the plant thrives within a natural ecosystem there is no use of pesticides or irrigation.”

QWSTION Bananatex

QWSTION Bananatex

The first steps in production are the same for both old and new processes. On site at the plantation, stalks are cut from the plant and stripped by hand into long spaghetti-like strands. These are air dried at the plantation for two days before being graded, bundled and shipped to a processing plant.

QWSTION Bananatex

QWSTION Bananatex

QWSTION Bananatex

It’s at this point where QWSTION developed a unique and slightly convoluted process. The fibers are pressed into large pulp sheets in the Philippines before being shipped to Taiwan where they are then soaked in water to create long rolls of thin paper. The paper is then cut into thin strips and spun into Bananatex® yarn. Once in yarn form Bananatex® has endless possibilities. Its first incarnation is a sturdy shell fabric treated with a natural beeswax for waterproofing. The result is a really likeable fabric with a canvas-like quality to it. The hand feel is unique, smooth like a synthetic and slightly crunchy. Christian says early lab testing is looking good. Its strength and abrasion resistance are still not at the level of Cordura, but more than enough for your daily carry. Or as he puts it, “Our pack can carry 100kg of concrete, a Cordura pack could carry 300kg. Nobody is ever going to carry 300kg of concrete.”

QWSTION Bananatex

“The fibers are pressed into large pulp sheets in the Philippines before being shipped to Taiwan where they are then soaked in water to create long rolls of thin paper. The paper is then cut into thin strips and spun into Bananatex® yarn.”

QWSTION Bananatex

Bananatex® is being launched in two new styles each designed with the same dedication to sustainability. There’s an everyday roll-top pack and a hip pouch that doubles as a small utility pouch. To complement Bananatex®, the rest of the fabric palette is meticulously minimal. The backpack is made from only five materials. Vegetable-tanned leather has been used on touch points, and aluminum for the custom-designed hooks. There’s no lining or webbing to be seen, and instead of foam padding for your laptop there is very clever use of thick wool felt. This approach minimises the environmental impact of the bag at both ends of its life cycle as there are fewer production processes, and the bag can be more easily recycled. According to Christian, once the metal and zips have been removed the bag is completely compostable. Put simply – less complexity is less impact.

QWSTION Hip Pouch

QWSTION Roll Pack

Like a chef cooking with top-quality ingredients, the designs are simple and allow the fabrics to be the hero. The patterns have zero cutting waste which Christian says was a challenge to achieve whilst aiming for maximum functionality. A good example of the thinking is the versatility of the backpack. Its simple detachable leather handle allows you to roll and carry the pack in a number of ways, giving you a range of personalities to choose from. And the aluminum hooks are used again on the pouch to convert it into hip pack form. By creating flexible products that can be used in a number of ways Christian hopes to reduce the need for people to buy multiple products.

QWSTION Roll Pack white

QWSTION Roll Pack

As dyeing is one of the chief causes of environmental impact in the production phase, both styles are being released in two colors chosen to minimise harm. The classic all-black has been yarn-dyed using the most sustainable practices available. But to go one step further and eliminate the problem altogether there is an undyed natural white.

QWSTION Bananatex

As someone who’s seen the realities of fabric manufacturing I have a huge appreciation for the effort that has gone into creating Bananatex®. The textiles industry has one of the longest and most complex supply chains and creating change takes commitment at all levels. Once the material is produced there are further challenges in quantifying the environmental impact, which often makes it hard to promote the benefits achieved. QWSTION seem to be asking the right questions and are showing a commitment to sustainability like few others. They are even offering Bananatex® as an open source material, meaning other brands can take advantage of their good work in order to maximise the positive environmental benefits.

QWSTION Bananatex

QWSTION Bananatex

For Christian and the team the greatest opportunity for Bananatex® is also its greatest challenge. “The biggest impact lies in the communication and how this can help to change consumer awareness and behavior”. For Bananatex® to make a real difference it’s going to require a shift in customer thinking similar to the one that occurred in the car market in which environmental impact became a major purchasing consideration. The majority of the bag market is currently filled with cheaper synthetic bags and big brands in an arms race for ultimate functionality. Spending time with the QWSTION bags I notice that the simplicity of the design does sacrifice some ease-of-use. There is a level of forethought required to pack and use the bags which I’m comfortable with only because I understand the thought behind the design. Ultimately, given QWSTION’s clear dedication to sustainability and commitment to balanced design over pure functionality, I can’t help but think that the brand’s name is directed at us, the customer, as a challenge to ‘question’ our own choices and to look more deeply into the things we buy.

When it comes to EDC essentials to pack for a day in Zurich, Christian Kaegi has his finger on the pulse. We asked the co-founder and creative director of QWSTION to share his top picks…

Great restaurants and bars, a dynamic creative scene, good access to Europe’s capitals, proximity to all sorts of outdoor activities and a lake you can drink from…that’s what I like about my home town Zürich. I wouldn’t say the clichés about the city don’t bear any truth; banking has always played an important role and is arguably the reason why it’s such an expensive place to live. But “my” Zürich has few touch points to the version that’s usually portrayed.

I’m Christian Kaegi, co-founder of Swiss carry brand QWSTION, and I’m going to give you a slightly biased list of my 10 essential things to carry around Zürich.

The bicycle is my partner in crime to get around the city, and it generally plays an important role in my life. It led me to study Industrial Design and it’s the reason we started our brand: we couldn’t find a bag that works just as well when commuting as in a business meeting, so we decided to make our own.

Camera: Canon G15

I like to carry a camera, although for snapshots the iPhone does the job. The G15 is super compact, yet has the manual settings to play around with. I photographed it at “Toni Areal”, the home of the university of arts where I studied. Next to programs in applied and fine arts, the former dairy processing facility now also is home to one of the most important design collections of the world including prototypes by Le Corbusier and Max Bill, as well as some of our QWSTION pieces. I can highly recommend booking a tour of the collection when visiting Zürich.

Canon G15

Pen: ystudio

For me sketching is a way to communicate, and an important part of my job. The rollerball pen by ystudio is my favorite tool for this. Made from solid brass, it offers that precise, high-quality feeling.

ystudio Rollerball Pen

Magazine: Apartamento

I believe inspiration can be found everywhere, but in terms of print Apartamento is my absolute favorite. A cappuccino goes well with a good read and my go-to place carries a pretty straightforward name: “Coffee”. The interior design of the small space is less understated than the name might suggest, and their profound knowledge of roasting and brewing is also a highlight.

Apartamento

Windbreaker: Norse Projects

This jacket is one of my everyday essentials for spring. Made from a densely woven waxed cotton it is light enough to take anywhere and also holds off a little rain. Pictured at the “Lochergut” area which has developed from a main transit route to a very lively neighborhood in recent years, with lots of great squares and restaurants.

Norse Projects

Sunglasses: VIU

Switzerland is known for its well balanced political culture of compromise. Although I’m sure this is good for politics, quite the opposite is the case for the things I buy. Less in quantity, better in quality is what I look for. VIU is part of the movement of new Swiss brands with a focus on design and was one of the first eyewear brands with a direct-to-consumer concept. Hence their high-quality eyewear is affordably priced. Affordability is not exactly a quality Zürich is known for on the other hand, but the many great open-air baths on the river and the lake are an exception: entry is usually free.

VIU Sunglasses

Headphones: AIAIAI

Laying under the trees of Josefswiese listening to Radiohead happens way too little, but when it does, it feels great. The essentialist headphones of Danish brand AIAIAI are always in my bag, just in case.

AIAIAI Headphones

Phone Case: Bellroy

I hate the fact phones are designed in a way that they can’t go without a case in everyday use. But Bellroy jumps in neatly here, as their case with integrated credit card slot replaced my wallet.

Sketchbook: Moleskine

Of course, a sketchbook is always with me. Once I started using the Moleskine Classic I never looked back. The page indicator and simple elastic closure do the trick.

Moleskine Classic

Watch: TID

It’s almost considered blasphemy to wear a foreign product in the land of watchmaking. But there clearly are similarities between Swedish and Swiss design, which becomes obvious in TID’s watches. The company named after the Swedish word for “time” was founded by members of Stockholm design studio Form Us With Love. I am wearing it because of its simplicity, and because they are super nice guys.

TID watch

Bag: QWSTION

And no surprises here, ha.

Our prototyping workshop and design studio is in the up-and-coming “Kreis 4” area of Zürich, which allows us to quickly test any new idea for a bag. The bag I’m using currently is a prototype of our Day Tote. At a volume of 18 liters, this hybrid between a tote and a backpack has all the useful pockets for the tools I use everyday, while offering the extra bit of space I appreciate when getting some groceries on the way home.

The collection includes the Limited Edition Travelsafe® 3L ECONYL® portable safe and Limited Edition Vibe 28L ECONYL® backpack. One hundred percent of profits from the two bags will go to Pacsafe’s Turtle Fund, which supports sea turtle conservation projects across the globe.
