The sling scene has been heating up over the past few years. But are sling bags any good? Is a backpack or sling bag better? This ultimately comes down to the design and the load you need to carry. With minimalism securely in the zeitgeist, we’re trimming down and carrying less, so a 20-30L backpack is overkill for some. A good sling bag snugs tight to the carrier and allows freer movement and quick access to essentials on the go. And when worn crossbody on the chest, it makes pick-pocketing pretty darn tricky.

The Best Sling Bags for Everyday Carry

These are some of the best sling bags to cater to a range of daily loads and settings. Below you’ll find tips on how to pick the right sling for you, as well as a closer look at each of our top picks to help you choose.

What to Look For in a Sling Bag

A balance between light weight and durability

Sling bags are generally designed to carry smaller loads and less weight, so they don’t need to be built like a tank. That being said, if you’ll be reaching for it regularly or putting it to demanding use, you’ll want decent durability which may result in a slight weight penalty. Ultimately it comes down to your intended use but a balance between durability and light weight should see you right for most carry needs.

Comfortable and adjustable strap

Good crossbody bags will offer a long, padded and adjustable strap that can preferably flip from right to left depending on user preference. Some smaller, lightweight sling bags may not require padding in the strap since they aren’t intended to carry heavy loads. But they should still offer flexible adjustability. And while a fanny pack may not require an ambidextrous strap to wear it round the waist, you’ll still want the ability to cinch or loosen the strap as required.

Padded back panel

Whether you’re carrying the bag as a hip bag, across the body or as a shoulder bag, pens and other sharp contents can dig into you without sufficient padding. But a padded back panel will help cushion the load and stop you getting jabbed. Again, smaller options may not require as much padding, but you’ll still benefit from at least a little protection.

Good organization

Having to rummage for smaller items is annoying and wastes time. So consider a sling bag that has sufficient organization to suit your carry setup. Perhaps you just need one or two pockets for a phone and keys. Alternatively you may want a padded pocket for a tablet or laptop, or discreet storage for valuables.

Easy access

One of the main benefits of a good crossbody bag is that it lets you readily access your gear on the go without having to remove it. So opt for one that shifts easily from the chest to the back and vice versa for smooth and friction-free access on the go. If you’re carrying it as a waist bag, it should still allow you to swivel it round easily for quick and convenient access.

Freedom of movement

Sling bags are designed to help keep you agile and nimble on the move. So you don’t want one that’s going to restrict your movement, regardless of how you’re carrying it. A good design will allow freedom to move, be it gliding across busy platforms or riding a bike.

So with the above in mind, which brand sling bag is best? Well, there isn’t one single best brand, but rather the best EDC sling bag for your particular needs. So let’s check out our picks of the best sling bags that will accommodate a range of setups and budgets…

Backpacks are considered the carry comfort kings. Duffels are the gear haulers. But when it comes to access and agility, the best messenger bags and shoulder bags step up for their time to shine. For many users, crossbody bags are go-to choices for quick access to gear on the move. They also tend to draw people who want to carry smaller loads or shed unnecessary carry bulk. And they also tend to get the nod of approval in work settings, where in many cases they bring a more formal and professional feel to your work setup than a backpack.

Best messenger bags: WP Standard Vintage Leather Messenger Bag

Messengers vs shoulder bags

So you might have heard the terms ‘messenger’ and ‘shoulder bag’ used interchangeably. But they aren’t actually the same thing. Messengers tend to be associated with more active use (think bags used by bicycle messengers), while shoulder bags play well in sedate settings. Features such as stabilizer straps are more common in messengers (again, to assist in load stability during active use). And in general messengers will wrap round the body more (a rigid design isn’t great if you’re pounding the pedals during a bike ride or trying to move nimbly in outdoor environments). That doesn’t mean you can’t use messengers in less strenuous settings or find shoulder bags that will tackle a little adventure now and then.

So with all of that in mind, what is a good brand of messenger bag? We know it can be time-consuming to search through countless bag options. So we’re shouldering the load by rounding up some of the best messenger bags and shoulder bags to suit different needs and settings. But, hey, it’s worth noting most of the below bags cross categories. They’re not only suited to certain needs, but they’re versatile too. Win!

Key Considerations When Choosing Your Bag

Ultimately, a lot of factors come into play to determine where messengers and shoulder bags will excel. Check out these tips on what to look for when choosing your ideal shoulder or messenger bag.

Style

If you need a splash of fashion with your function, you may be wondering, are messenger bags still cool? Of course they are! And are messenger bags unisex? For the most part, yes. But this incredibly popular carry category comes in a great variety of styles, colorways, and materials to cater to a wide range of tastes and needs. So to help you choose, it’s useful to think about where you’ll be using the bag.

Do you need it for work purposes? If so, is your work environment smart-casual or formal? In these cases, understated colorways like black, gray, navy, or tan will blend in better (no matter how much you may be digging that blazing orange, it’s best saved for after-work hours). Clean silhouettes or soft draping designs will also be easier to fit in formal environments than “busy” designs that draw the eye (but not for the right reasons). If you won’t be using the bag for work purposes (or your work environment is more laid-back), you’ve got a little more freedom in the style department. Yep, bring on that blazing orange…

United By Blue Lakeland Laptop Bag

Size and weight

Obviously your messenger or shoulder bag needs to be large enough to hold all the gear you need it to. But you’ll want to be careful here. The bigger the bag is, the more bulk you’ll be carrying around. Ask yourself if the added space is worth the increased weight and bulk penalty. Maybe you need it or really value the ability to accommodate a variety of loads from one day to the next. But if you tend to carry a set amount of gear, picking a bag that’s just big enough without adding unnecessary weight may be a better option.

For example, are messenger bags good for laptops? Some are much better suited to tech carry than others and will be sized accordingly to fit different devices. They may also have additional features such as padded sleeves that add to the bulk. Potentially increased size and bulk is a worthy trade-off if you regularly carry a laptop but unnecessary if you don’t.

Access

So you’ve got a bag that’s the right size and suits your style, but how about getting to your gear? One of the key advantages of messengers and shoulder bags over other types of carry is the on-body access they provide. The ability to easily swing them round to your front to get to frequently used essentials or to access gear from the main compartment without having to remove the bag from your shoulder. Features such as quick-release shoulder straps, exterior pockets, magnetic or one-handed flap buckles, and multiple access points to the main compartment will help you get to gear in a jiffy.

Durability

Are you going to be putting your bag through the wringer on regular cycle commutes? Shoving it in and out of overhead compartments or heading off into the wilderness for a day of exploring trails or outdoor photography? The more demanding you are on your bag, the tougher it will need to be. Abrasion-resistant and water-resistant materials along with trusty construction will help your bag cope when the going gets tough. Great for an EDC messenger bag that needs to endure demanding use or a travel messenger bag you can rely on to keep going strong. If your bag will be living a more relaxed or sheltered life, you can dial back on the durability, which may help you cut some weight.

Best Messenger Bags: Mission Workshop Monty Advanced

Comfort

While shoulder bags and messengers don’t offer the same level of load distribution that backpacks do, they can still be comfortable to carry. Keep an eye out for a wide shoulder strap that will help spread the load a little, as well as padding on the strap to help enhance comfort. For more active use your chosen bag should offer good breathability in the back panel, a design that hugs the body, and a stabilizer strap or waist belt to help secure the load. And carry handles come in useful too when you want to give your shoulder a breather or are carrying the bag over shorter distances or in more formal environments.

Delve into some of the best tech pouches and organizers to carry every day…

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who open up their bag, briefcase, or sling to find an abominable maelstrom of pens, chargers, flashlights and sundry loose items, and those who use pouches to carefully organize their lives and bags. We assume, dear readers of Carryology, that you have chosen the moral high ground and are the second kind of person.

Thus, we will not waste time convincing you that you NEED more organization in your life. Rather we will guide you in choosing the correct pouch, organizer, or Dopp kit that fulfills your wildest OCD and EDC fantasies.

But first, here are some things to consider in your search for the best tech pouches.

Peak Design Tech Pouch

Use Case

When hunting down the best tech pouches for your EDC, you should always start with three questions: What are you carrying, how are you going to use it, and what’s important to you?

To answer the opening question, we recommend placing all of your EDC on a flat surface to take stock (pro tip: if you haven’t used something in a month, then it might be time for at-home storage; there’s no need to be weighed down). Once you get a fix on how much you need to carry, and what array of shapes and sizes you need to pack, you’ll be one step closer to pinpointing the size and shape of the best tech pouches for your setup.

Now, how are you going to use it… do you need it for your tech cables, medicine, or pencils? Will you need it as a quick grab at the office or something that acts more like a tray for continuous pillaging over the day – illustrators, we’re talking to you!

Does your favorite everyday bag have a cavernous wide space to store a thick pouch, or do you need a slim-figured zip-up to fit into a smaller side pocket? Or will you need MOLLE / PALS attachments on the back panel to snugly attach your pouch to your tactical pack, high up and out of crush zones?

And lastly, what’s important? Do you want added protection to fend off bumps and drops? Or waterproofing to keep the wet out? Or quick access to your essentials at all times? So, let’s dig into this stuff a little deeper…

Nite Ize RunOff Travel Pouches

Level of Organization

While many companies make some version of a simple and cheap(er) pouch to throw little knicks and knacks inside, these can quickly become unwieldy and disorganized. On the other hand, some pouches can be overly specific with their layouts, meaning if you don’t carry EXACTLY what the manufacturer intended, your loadout might not work well in the pre-measured spaces provided in these highly organized Dopps. Again, knowing what you want to carry and finding the right balance is key when determining the best tech pouches for your needs.

Durability

Most of us probably don’t need to worry if our items are protected from a 100-foot fall or can be submerged underwater for an hour, but having a bit of water resistance or padding can add peace of mind when riding your bike home in the middle of a storm or if somebody accidentally spills a Big Gulp on you in the subway. Many of the best tech pouches already offer a bit of protection just inherently by adding an extra layer of fabric, but if you want to go the extra mile, you might also have to take a bit of a weight or size penalty.

Best tech pouches: ORBITGear MOD-01 “THE CUBE”

Weight and Size

If all you want to do is organize the four ballpoint pens you bring with you to work every day, you probably don’t need an organizer that also fits a laptop sleeve. However, if you’re carrying a mobile office, or traveling to a client, you might want to have a bit more on hand. While shaving a few grams with materials like Dyneema can be a cool touch to your EDC, be prepared to pay for that weight saving with your wallet.

The Best Tech Pouches and Organizers to EDC

Versatility and Adaptability

Some of us are focused (or obsessed) enough to have a pouch for every application. While I’m a huge fan of having my “Hiking First Aid” always set aside for a quick grab and go, and my “Tech Pouch” ready to be thrown into whatever bag I decide to carry that day, it’s sometimes nice to have a vessel (or two) that can be customized to whatever I need. Today it might be “Taking the dogs for a walk in the hills” and tomorrow it might be “I’m running late so here’s a bunch of stuff I need”. Having the ability to change your loadout without having to buy a new bit of gear can be priceless.

…Although we won’t fault you for wanting to buy a new bit of gear…

Price Point

Sometimes you need to pay a premium to get what you want, but other times you can get by with a bit of a budget kit that suits your needs perfectly. The best tech pouches below range from $25 to $80 so you’re guaranteed to find something that fits your needs and your wallet.

So, keeping in mind all of the things above, we’ve hand-picked a few (or more) of the best tech pouches, travel organizers, and Dopp kits to really scratch that EDC itch.

George Davis is a nuclear engineer who loves skiing, hiking and mountain biking and he’s kindly shared his packing list for two weeks in Chile. He’ll be spending a few days in Santiago, a few days in Valparaiso, and will be doing two multi-day backpacking trips – the W-trek in Torres del Paine National Park and Dientes de Navarino on Isla Navarino – with time between spent at Puerto Williams and Puerto Natales.

Because of the varied climates (90F+ in Santiago and down to the low 30s and possible rain/snow on Isla Navarino) and environments (city life vs. wilderness), he needs a varied wardrobe and kit. Check out his carefully curated packing list below.

What-to-pack-for-Chile

Mountain Laurel Designs Burn

This tried and true UL pack has undegone numerous iterations and improvements over the years. It’s commonly used for SUL thru hikes or shorter UL hikes and weighs just 16oz with 38 liters of space. It is frameless, so you need to make sure the rest of your gear is light. There’s a main compartment, side pockets, and a big mesh pocket on the back. No separate internal compartments however as it’s really made for UL backpacking trips – I used packing organizers to remedy this.

Mountain Laurel Designs Burn

UGQ Outdoor Bandit Top Quilt

Quilts are better than sleeping bags because they’re lighter for the same warmth (all the down compressed under your body with a normal sleeping bag doesn’t help keep you warm), pack down smaller, and are more flexible (you can stick a leg out if you get too hot). They’re typically made by cottage manufacturers for UL backpacking, but some bigger brands are starting to make them now due to their rising popularity. With this quilt you can customize the inner and outer shell fabrics and colors, what type of foot box you want, and what fill and how much down and overstuffing you want. There are many manufacturers out there (MLD, Enlightened Equipment, Feathered Friends, ZPacks, and even REI now) but I picked this quilt because it hits the perfect price vs. quality point.

 UGQ Outdoor Bandit Top Quilt

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xtherm Sleeping Pad

This is a slightly heavier, slightly warmer version of the popular X-Lite sleeping pad. It weighs just under a pound but has a large enough r-value (sleeping pad insulation value) to keep me warm into the teens; too low a value means you will be cold no matter what your bag or quilt is rated for. It’s comfy at 2.5 inches thick, allowing me to side sleep without bottoming out. Plus it rolls up into a compact cylinder a bit smaller than your typical Nalgene bottle.

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xtherm Sleeping Pad

Tarptent Notch

Why anyone still sleeps in big heavy tents that are complicated to set up or pack and have a bazillion poles and poor ergonomics is beyond me. For prices comparable to those of popular tents, you can get a shelter that is much lighter, probably more durable, packs smaller, and is easier to pitch as well.

The Notch weights just 27 oz and is a dual wall shelter (meaning it helps prevent condensation from getting on you and the inner net shelter can be set up by itself if the weather is nice) with two large vestibules and dual entry. It also uses trekking poles as support poles to help reduce weight. The waterproof bathtub floor prevents you from getting soaked by rain splashing up or if a puddle forms under your tent. Plus the Notch is wind resistant and you can adjust the pitch to prevent wind or rain from getting in; valuable in Patagonia and southern Chile where the winds can be very strong and the weather unpredictable.

Tarptent Notch

Smartwool Merino T-shirts

These t-shirts are odor resistant, lightweight, pack down very small, come in attractive but muted colors, dry quickly, and wick sweat. There’s a reason everyone loves merino for travel or just being comfy.

Smartwool Merino T-shirt

Arc’teryx Atom LT Jacket

The Atom LT Jacket is about as warm as (but less breathable than) Patagonia’s NanoAir jacket, with a better cut and much better hood. It serves as an insulation layer on top of my shirt or light fleece and under the rain jacket.

 Arc'teryx Atom LT Jacket

Montbell Versalite Jacket

This is a very lightweight but fully functional rain jacket that serves as my wind/rain barrier. It  has pit zips, an adjustable hood, and multiple pockets. And for easy storage it zips up into its own pocket or stuffs into a bag about the size of a soda can.

 Montbell Versalite Jacket

Melanzana UL Microgrid Hoodie

This hoodie is a cult item on r/ultralight simply because of how hard it is to get; it’s a thin micro grid fleece (like the Patagonia R1) with a baggier cut and is only sold at Melanzana’s store in Leadville, CO. It’s a lightweight insulation layer that stays warm when dry, looks good around town, and doesn’t scream tourist.

Melanzana Microgrid Hoodie

Pistol Lake One-Bag Henley

I discovered this company on r/onebag and quickly fell in love with the henley after ordering my first one. It’s made with very comfortable fabric that looks great, dries quickly, and can be used while hiking or to dress up a bit when in town. I haven’t worn it yet as Santiago has been pretty hot, but it will get plenty of use on Isla Navarino and in Puerto Natales.

Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Fabric Packing Cubes

This is the first time I’ve ever used packing cubes. Normally I just use cuben/silnylon stuff sacks, but these are about the same weight and have helped with the larger variety of clothes/electronics I brought for this trip.

Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Packing Cubes

Electronics

I’m taking the EPICKA power adapter with multiple USB ports for charging stuff in Chile. Nothing too fancy – it’s compact and does its job. I’m also taking the Anker PowerCore II 10000 for charging my electronics on the trail. It’s a large capacity just to be safe.

EPICKA power adapter and Anker PowerCore II 10000

Taking along on the journey is my iPhone XR. I recently changed providers and upgraded from my SE to this while doing so. I love how long the battery life is and all of the updated features that my SE didn’t have. It takes good enough pictures when I don’t feel like taking out a camera. It also serves as a GPS, translator, reference for getting food/drinks/figuring out what to do in town, etc.

Apple iPhone XR

My Petzl Zipka headlamp is light and bright, with good battery life. I don’t anticipate using it much because the sun doesn’t set until very late so far south, but I would never go backpacking without a headlamp.

 Petzl Zipka

Camera Gear

The Fujifilm X-T20 with XF 10-24mm f/4 OIS is a great compact camera that has excellent image quality. It’s paired with the 10-24mm to hopefully get some great landscapes on Isla Navarino and in Torres del Paine. I’m bringing three batteries in total.

Fujifilm X-T20

The Pedco UltraPod II is a lightweight tripod that can stand by itself or be attached to branches/poles/fences, etc.

Pedco UltraPod II Tabletop Tripod

Also making the trip is the Peak Designs Capture Clip v3. This awesome little device lets you very securely mount your camera on a shoulder strap of a backpack. It also has a quick release so you can have the camera on or off in less than a second.

Peak Design Capture Camera Clip V3

Other Accessories

I’m taking Bellroy’s Slim Sleeve wallet which is an awesome slim wallet that fits easily in a front pocket and holds cards, IDs, and a bit of cash. Bellroy makes awesome quality stuff.

Bellroy Slim Sleeve

I’m also packing a Field Notes notebook. I actually haven’t used this at all. I’ll probably use it once I’m on the trail to record thoughts and make a small journal of the journey. I use these extensively for work to track tasks, ideas, etc.

 Field Notes Expedition 3-Pack

Toiletries

I’m packing some Dr. Bronner’s magic soap, a toothbrush, and toothpaste; these all fit in a small cuben sack.

The post Carry Guide: Find the Best Travel Backpack for You appeared first on Carryology - Exploring better ways to carry.

]]>
So here’s the thing. There’s no ultimate best travel backpack to suit everyone at any time, anywhere. It’s impossible for one bag to meet every carry need and adapt to every carry environment. But then, you don’t actually need a bag that does that. You need a travel bag that’s best suited to your particular needs. So we’ve put together this carry guide to help you think about what those needs may be, what features will meet those needs, and to dish up a selection of solid packs that may just be right for you.

Why backpack over luggage?

But first, why might you want a travel backpack over other luggage? If you’re set on embracing one-bag travel or know you’ll be encountering a wide variety of settings, from stairs to cobbled streets to rocky trails, skipping the wheels and opting for a pack will make traveling easier. A backpack lets you move more easily through crowds and changing terrain than with a wheeled bag in tow. And it keeps your hands free too. And hey, if you need to check luggage, you still might require a great carry-on backpack by your side.

So if you’re keen to find the best travel backpack for you, these are some considerations to bear in mind.

Peak Design

Weight versus durability

Those packing pounds are precious and overweight baggage fees are certainly to be avoided whenever possible. So shedding some weight in your actual bag will help you stick within carry-on limits. But you also want it to be durable enough to withstand demanding travel use. After all, if it fails that leaves you and all your travel possessions in a tricky situation. In general, you may find yourself needing to sacrifice light weight for increased durability. But on the flip side, you don’t want to be carrying a tank on your back either. Ultimately it comes down to a balance that suits your needs. If you know you’ll be rough on your bag and ask it to endure tough use, it’s better to take the weight penalty for greater durability. The less strain it needs to endure, the more weight savings you might make.

Think about how durable the material is (is it Cordura or X-Pac or canvas, for example?) and consider things like zipper and hardware quality too. For example, you’ll want a burlier zipper for the main compartment where there will be more tension than on pockets. A quality name such as YKK is a good pick. Also look for good warranties. You want a bag that will last. But if something does happen to go wrong, a warranty can be reassuring.

GORUCK

Weather resistance

Sometimes it’s sunny. Sometimes it’s a drenching downpour. You should be prepared for both. Think about features such as water-resistant materials, water-resistant zippers for tech pockets, and raincovers for added protection. Most travel situations won’t require completely waterproof bags so water-resistant should suffice for the majority of your trips. Plus you can always get waterproof pouches to store valuables and tech you don’t want to get wet.

Heimplanet Travel Pack

Size versus usable space

If you can manage it, opt for a bag that’s suitable for carry-on use. This lets you keep your luggage with you and reduce the risk of losing it. It also helps you avoid checked luggage fees. Of course, it’s important to confirm carry-on dimensions with your intended airline to ensure your pack fits the bill. But then things can start to get tricky with usable space. Two bags may claim to have the same volume but offer differences in the amount of usable space they provide. Awkward designs, tapering silhouettes and rigid materials with no give to them can restrict the gear you can pack. If you want space flexibility consider expandable designs, along with options for securing larger items externally to the pack, like PALS webbing.

Aesthetics

Sure, you might be a tourist. But that doesn’t mean you want to look like one and draw unnecessary attention to yourself. The aesthetics of your travel backpack play a big role here, not to mention affecting versatility. Outdoorsy packs will look out of place in urban settings. Discreet and minimalist designs with subdued colors stand out less in a crowd. And such designs are easier to transition from a work meeting to a weekend away.

Minaal

If you need a bag for work and play, consider one that lets you stow the straps and carry it briefcase-style for a more professional look. This also helps reduce the potential for snagging when fitting the bag in overhead bins, under seats or in small vehicle trunks. A pack with a slim profile is also easier for moving through crowds with. All that being said, you should feel happy with the style of bag you’re carrying. And there’s no reason you can’t let a little bit of personality shine through in fabric or colorway choices. Just bear in mind how versatile you want that bag to be and how much you want to blend in.

Cotopaxi Allpa

Access

How easy is it to get to the main compartment for packing and retrieving gear? Clamshells or lay-flat designs are good options for being able to reach items easily throughout the main compartment. And quick-access pockets will keep essential items at the ready. Carrying tech? Dedicated easy-access storage for a laptop or tablet will come in handy too, especially for going through airport security.

Topo Designs Travel Bag

Comfort

The degree of carry comfort you require will depend on how much load you’re carrying and where you’re traveling. Some packs also come in specific men’s and women’s options to better suit different body types. But comfy padded, ergonomic shoulder straps are pretty much a requirement for any good travel pack. If you need to carry a lot of weight you may want a hip belt, load lifters and a sternum strap to help stabilize and support the load. However, hip belts do add weight and aren’t necessary for lighter loads, so you can shed weight when required by choosing a bag with a removable hip belt.

Also a breathable back panel with features such as air mesh or air vents can assist in keeping you cooler. This is particularly useful for traveling in hotter and humid climates. However, even in colder climates you’re unlikely to be able to completely avoid sweat if you’re walking around for an extended period of time with a load on your back. Being able to carry the pack as a shoulder bag or with a handle can help keep your back cooler.

Organization

If you favor packing cubes, you may prefer a main compartment with minimal interior organization. However, features such as internal dividers can help you adapt to different loads and you may still appreciate a few interior pockets for stashing smaller items. Regardless of interior organization preferences, pick a pack with at least a couple of quick-access pockets. These come in useful for storing items such as a passport, tickets, pen, wallet, phone or water bottle within easy reach so you don’t need to rummage for them and undo your careful packing. You might also want options for carrying bulky items such as sleeping mats, tripods, pouches and the like externally. If so, look for features such as external stretch pockets, attachment straps and loops or webbing to secure carabiners.

Aer Travel Pack 2

Security

You should mostly have your bag on you or close by during your travels. But opportunistic thieves may still chance their luck. Security features such as lockable zippers, anti-theft zipper loops, and discreet storage pockets for valuables can help deter them and protect your gear. Ultimately if they’re determined enough they’ll get in but such features make your bag a less appealing target and increase the chances that thieves will pass over it for an easier alternative.

A lot of thought goes into making good camera bags. By their nature they’re designed to look after expensive kit, so it’s important they do their job well. And that means nailing some key criteria. But those aren’t the only things to think of when choosing one. You also need to decide what style of bag is best for you. A lot of the time, that means deciding between a camera backpack and a camera messenger or sling bag.

ONA Brixton

Camera backpack vs messenger

Choosing between a pack and a messenger can be like choosing between a Nikon and a Canon. One option isn’t inherently better than the other. Rather, it’s a case of figuring out which one best suits your specific needs. And to do so, it’s handy to think about what you’re carrying, where you’re carrying it, and for how long.

Backpacks are a better choice for heavier and larger loads. That’s because in general they offer better weight distribution, more load stability, and greater comfort over extended periods of use. Backpacks are good for longer photography sessions and for the most part can more easily accommodate a variety of loads versus a messenger or sling which is generally smaller. However, they can be bulky in crowded spaces and make it difficult to access gear quickly. Not necessarily a problem in open outdoor environments or when you can take your time with a shot, but not ideal when you need rapid access or agility in crowds.

How about messengers and slings? They’re great for smaller loads and maneuvering easily through crowded spaces. But one of the main draws is the quick access they offer. Unlike packs that require you to fully or partially remove the bag to get to gear, messengers and slings let you quickly move the bag to the front of your body to access gear, all without taking the bag off. Additionally, they also offer greater flexibility in portability. For instance, they can be worn across the chest or back, over the shoulder, or even round your waist. The downside of messengers and slings? They don’t offer the same degree of weight distribution and extended carry comfort that a pack does. And in general less load stability too (though a stabilizer strap can help). They also don’t generally carry as much gear as a pack, which is good for keeping bulk down but restricts your packing choices to smaller gear setups.

Considering the above, you should have a fairly good idea of whether a pack or messenger/sling best suits your needs. Below we’re going to zoom in on handy tips and recommendations for camera messengers and slings. But if you’re keen to delve into pack alternatives, check out our buyer’s guide to the best camera backpacks.

Peak Design Everyday Sling

Now to help you pick the right camera messenger/sling bag for your needs, here are some useful considerations to bear in mind.

Protection from the elements, bumps and scrapes

It’s fairly obvious, you don’t want your precious kit getting exposed to the elements. So look for features such as water-resistant materials, rain covers, and secure designs that avoid side gaps at the top of the flap.

And because you’re in the real world where life isn’t always kind to your gear, you’ll want sufficient padding to protect your gear and provide shock absorption. Plus abrasion-resistant, tough materials to fend off scrapes and handle regular use.

Flexible organization

Good organization makes a big difference to how quickly you can get to gear. Keep an eye out for flexible organization (such as adjustable dividers and a range of pockets) to suit different loads and keep smaller items at the ready. Also keep an eye out for exterior straps that can carry bulkier items such as a tripod.

Peak Design Everyday Messenger

Easy access to gear

That perfect shot often doesn’t wait around until you’re ready. So you need to be able to access gear fast. Features such as quick-adjust straps, top access without needing to open the flap, and nifty magnetic buckles all assist in making gear easily accessible when you need it.

Peak Design Everyday Sling

Adaptable, understated aesthetics

You wouldn’t willingly want to advertise your camera to potential pickpockets. And a camera bag shouldn’t do so either. Understated aesthetics won’t draw attention to expensive gear, helping you avoid unscrupulous scrutiny. Additionally, low-key aesthetics make it easier for the bag to adapt to a variety of photography environments or day-to-day use.

Multi-functional design

While not strictly necessary in a camera bag, a multi-functional design is a handy bonus feature. Consider whether the piece you have your eye on can double as an everyday or travel bag for added flexibility and value for money. Additionally, features such as a stabilizer strap will help keep the load secure, making it easier to move from laidback to more active use such as hiking or cycling with the bag. And if there’s a little bit of expandability to boot? Even better when you need to store a variety of items.

Tenba DNA 13

So with the above considerations in mind, we’ve selected some of the best messenger and sling camera bags that are well worth scoping out in your hunt for your next photography partner.
