There are great American brands making awesome carry gear. And on the flip side, there are plenty making poor carry too. Ultimately where a bag is made is less important than the company behind it. So if you want to support carry that’s made in America, it’s important to look beyond that USA-made label tag and consider the brand as a whole. Do they create quality gear? Is it functional? Will it stand the test of time? If the answers are ‘yes’, then you’ve got a worthy contender on your hands. And it’s these kinds of values and design choices that our favorite made in USA backpack brands uphold.

Bike Backpacks Made in the USA

Inside Line Equipment

One of California’s lesser-known bike carry brands, ILE are burly and bomber, and, in our book, deserve more cred. Founded in 2012 by Eric Fischer, it’s a brand that keeps it simple. Clean, no BS design, with a focus on easy functionality. Everything’s US-made, from the super tough Cordura to the threads that stitch it together, and built in-house to rigorous standards. If you want a rugged, made in USA backpack for commuting (and nowadays travel and camera gear), ILE are a local brand to check out.

Lots of great things are coming out of Portland, Oregon, and North St. Bags are no exception. Founded in 2009 by Curtis Williams, their bags are simple and classic and made in-house, right on the store floor. In their early days, they drew acclaim for their ingenious Woodward backpack/pannier hybrid, and have now branched off into noteworthy collabs (recently with Kiriko Made) and experiments with technical fabrics like X-Pac sailcloth.

Their American made backpacks are built with mostly USA-made materials and backed by a lifetime guarantee. And if you fancy a little personalization to your pack, there are custom colorway options too.

Many of their bags are made in Chico, California. And if you’re local to one of their Chrome Hubs, we’d suggest rolling in and asking them to craft you a custom bag like no other.

And the best part: they’re reportedly built in his garage. All by hand, using Dyneema and Cordura. Completely custom-built to each individual’s precise measurements. No two are alike. A word of warning, you’ll need to navigate your way through his archaic website to make contact, but trust us, it’s worth it.

Recycled Firefighter

Recycled Firefighter

Dig into the history behind Recycled Firefighter and you’ll find a pretty darn inspiring story. It was founded by full-time firefighter Jake Starr who wanted additional part-time work he could do from home to support his family. He taught himself to sew and went through hundreds of failed products and prototypes before getting his big break in the carry community through a wallet made from decommissioned fire hose. Countless hours of work month after month (and learning from plenty of mistakes along the way) allowed him to grow the brand. Now Recycled Firefighter offers a range of bags and wallets, made by hand in the USA. The packs are crafted with 1000D Cordura, USA-made hardware and reinforced stitching in high-stress areas. Designed for everyday use and short trips, these tough packs offer an appealing mix of functionality and dependable durability you can count on for years to come.

The James Brand The Chapter

I’m more peace, love and mung-beans than concealed carry, so I try to avoid scary-aggressive knives. That’s where The James Brand fits my vibes well. You still get a honed edge and slick mechanisms, but without scaring friends every time you reach for a blade. From hacking sample products to splitting an apple for the kids, and yes, like most of us I also use it to open my online purchases.
.
Useful hack: I clip my Chapter near the top of my bag in a highly visible location, so I’ll never miss removing it before plane flights.

Bellroy-Travel-Wallet-Well-Loved

Bellroy Travel Wallet

Sometimes your accoutrements hit the counter perfectly. Perfection is how I would describe the Bellroy Travel Wallet. The leather has been pounded on a Royal Enfield in India, submerged in the salt waters off the coast of Okinawa, frozen in Antarctica, and seasoned across seven continents. I’ve tried to turn away from her, twice, but I can’t escape her worn sophistication, understated beauty and practical functionality. The rare kind of natural beauty turning heads for how she looks and what she has to say. A character far outweighing her rough edges.

Hamburg has a pretty cold and wet climate. It is Winter / Spring, but the weather switches quite a lot from cold to warm to cold. Therefore I like to layer up a couple of jackets. My current favorite outershell that I have been testing the last few months is the Alchemy Equipment AEM105 Raincoat. Yes it’s “just” a raincoat but it’s not only water resistant but also works well against those cold winds. I use this with a couple of good isolating and warming base layers underneath. The AEM105 keeps the warmth inside and rain, snow and harsh winds outside. And since I layer my jackets this is basically a great jacket for the whole year.

If you cast your mind back ten years you might remember that buying luggage was fairly dull. If you couldn’t afford a Cosmolite or a Rimowa there wasn’t much to get excited about. That’s why I’m a big supporter of the newcomers designing smart, simple luggage. The debut carry-on spinner from local brand July is a great example. It’s sturdy and well built with a Dieter Rams feel to it. Aesthetic whilst unobtrusive. The colour options are all solid, as are the aluminium bumpers. And although I haven’t used the battery compartment it feels like the right level of tech. Altogether it’s been a classy travel companion.

My pick would go to the Victorinox MiniChamp Multi-Tool. It’s got a tool for every occasion – a pair of scissors for all those loose ends, a screwdriver because there’s always a screw to tighten, and my favorite, a built-in flashlight. All that and more stuffed into a package no larger than my pinky finger. It has replaced several other EDC items on the daily and it’s super cute and definitely not as aggressive (and heavy) as pulling out a full-fledged Leatherman.

I’m rocking a 24Bottles Urban Bottle these days. It’s a 500ml stainless steel bottle that, to me, has just the right size, doesn’t take up a whole lot of space, drinks very well and looks pretty cool too. I prefer a steel bottle over plastic because of hygiene. 24Bottles has bigger bottles and insulated bottles as well, they come in all kinds of colors and you can even personalize them if you order online.

In my film school days, I’d haul 50+ lbs. all over NYC in a massive, canvas, Czech military surplus backpack that probably weighed 15 lbs. empty. Now that I’m a minimalist carry devotee, my EDC is a phone, car key, and a tiny front pocket wallet: the 0.6 oz origami-inspired Nik’s Minimalist Wallet from Tom Bihn. It keeps my credit cards, cash, and driver’s licence tucked away in a package so smooth and small it slips easily into my front pocket, disappearing until I need it. After a year of daily carry it’s traveled with me around the world and shows no signs of wear. For me it’s the perfect combination of function and visually minimalist design.

Spyderco techno2
.

I really can’t imagine any outdoor adventure without some sort of cutting tool with me. It doesn’t have to be big, but must be strong, useful and dependable. Recently I’ve been carrying the Spyderco Techno 2, designed by talented Polish custom knifemaker Marcin Slysz. The titanium handle with frame lock accounts for strength and user safety. The blade measures 2.55″ and it’s made of modern supersteel CTS-XHP. I really like the blade profile, inspired by Japanese Santoku kitchen knives. With its strong tip and lowered cutting edge it excels in everyday tasks and all kinds of camp-kitchen uses. A thumb ramp, lanyard hole, ambidextrous deep carry clip and one-handed opening complete the package. It’s one of the newest models for Spyderco, great for EDC and due to its size also legal in most places. I really like my little Spydie helper…and it looks good too.

Yeti-Camino-Carryall-Tote
.
.
Yeti’s tote has become my go-to bag for daily and weekend trips. When I’m going into work it easily fits all my gym clothes and shoes, a lunch, and other odds and ends. It’s big enough that I don’t need to wrestle to fit all my gear into it, and it still has a handy semi-closure hook on the top to prevent it from being wide open on the subway. And when I get into work, the tote has a hard bottom so it will always stand up on its own which is great to set up shop with next to my desk. Similarly for the outdoors, this tote is super handy to load up with food or gear. Its shell is super durable so tools won’t ding it, and it can easily be wiped down if something spills in it. Yeti has elevated the humble tote with their Camino Carryall. I’m pleased to report that it lives up to its name!

It’s become my go-to when I want to travel light to and from work with just the essentials (laptop, Kindle, charger, noise cancelling headphones). Plus it’s waterproof so worrying about any inclement weather is off the table.

DSPTCH CapSnap

The team at DSPTCH released the Cap Snap to solve the problem of having your cap crushed while on the go, while saving precious interior cargo space. The clever design is simple to use and small enough to keep attached to your daily pack, travel bag, or even belt loop via the carabiner clip. The other end grabs hold of the button found on the crown of the cap (fun fact, it’s called a squatchee), and tightly locks into place. I’ve been using a CapSnap for a few months now and haven’t had any issues while traveling. For $10 it’s a deal. I’m looking forward to getting the limited edition UNDFTD version that teased on Instagram.

Muyshondt Aeon Mk. III Flashlight

I am loving my titanium Muyshondt Aeon Mk. III flashlight. It has been my daily companion for some time and so far I can’t find another torch that knocks it out of my pocket. While the rest of my EDC can change almost daily, the Aeon is the one constant (although I alternate between my plain and bead blasted Titanium versions). At under 2.5″ long, under 1″ in diameter and running on the tiny CR2 cell, it really falls in that sweet spot for a high-end EDC light in terms of size, quality and performance. There are some fantastic alternatives available, from more budget-friendly offerings to gorgeous custom torches, but the Aeon is tough to beat and really punches above its weight class. The fact that they are beautiful is just an added bonus. I also added some 550 Paracord and matching Ti Scoopyloops lanyard beads to personalize them just a bit.

purist-water-bottles

My wife and I started using the first collection of Purist bottles. They come in three sizes, from a small 10 oz which is great for having coffee in the morning, to a large 32 oz bottle for carrying on trips or around the office from meeting to meeting as many of my colleagues like to do. They are stainless steel and can keep drinks hot for 12 hours and cold for up to 24 hours. They have a “glasslike” interior coating which allows it to not retain any flavors so you can easily swap between coffee in the morning and water later in the day without any discernible residue. The exterior is a matte, almost powder-coated or sandblasted finish which looks really modern and sleek and they have a built-in carry handle that tucks away when not in use.

Bleu-De-Chauffe-Gaston-Musette

Bleu-De-Chauffe Gaston Musette

I’ve been slinging the Bleu-De-Chauffe Gaston Musette or about 6 months now and for the heritage inclined, this musette ticks a lot of boxes. Built with 18oz. British Millerain Lick-Wax cotton twill, luscious, ecologically friendly vegetable tanned leathers, and rugged brass hardware, there’s lovely refinement at play here; think Filson, but inspired by work-wear and signed by the artisan who made it in the Averyon region of southern France. Win!

The post Carry Guide: Find the Best Travel Backpack for You appeared first on Carryology - Exploring better ways to carry.

]]>
So here’s the thing. There’s no ultimate best travel backpack to suit everyone at any time, anywhere. It’s impossible for one bag to meet every carry need and adapt to every carry environment. But then, you don’t actually need a bag that does that. You need a travel bag that’s best suited to your particular needs. So we’ve put together this carry guide to help you think about what those needs may be, what features will meet those needs, and to dish up a selection of solid packs that may just be right for you.

Why backpack over luggage?

But first, why might you want a travel backpack over other luggage? If you’re set on embracing one-bag travel or know you’ll be encountering a wide variety of settings, from stairs to cobbled streets to rocky trails, skipping the wheels and opting for a pack will make traveling easier. A backpack lets you move more easily through crowds and changing terrain than with a wheeled bag in tow. And it keeps your hands free too. And hey, if you need to check luggage, you still might require a great carry-on backpack by your side.

So if you’re keen to find the best travel backpack for you, these are some considerations to bear in mind.

Peak Design

Weight versus durability

Those packing pounds are precious and overweight baggage fees are certainly to be avoided whenever possible. So shedding some weight in your actual bag will help you stick within carry-on limits. But you also want it to be durable enough to withstand demanding travel use. After all, if it fails that leaves you and all your travel possessions in a tricky situation. In general, you may find yourself needing to sacrifice light weight for increased durability. But on the flip side, you don’t want to be carrying a tank on your back either. Ultimately it comes down to a balance that suits your needs. If you know you’ll be rough on your bag and ask it to endure tough use, it’s better to take the weight penalty for greater durability. The less strain it needs to endure, the more weight savings you might make.

Think about how durable the material is (is it Cordura or X-Pac or canvas, for example?) and consider things like zipper and hardware quality too. For example, you’ll want a burlier zipper for the main compartment where there will be more tension than on pockets. A quality name such as YKK is a good pick. Also look for good warranties. You want a bag that will last. But if something does happen to go wrong, a warranty can be reassuring.

GORUCK

Weather resistance

Sometimes it’s sunny. Sometimes it’s a drenching downpour. You should be prepared for both. Think about features such as water-resistant materials, water-resistant zippers for tech pockets, and raincovers for added protection. Most travel situations won’t require completely waterproof bags so water-resistant should suffice for the majority of your trips. Plus you can always get waterproof pouches to store valuables and tech you don’t want to get wet.

Heimplanet Travel Pack

Size versus usable space

If you can manage it, opt for a bag that’s suitable for carry-on use. This lets you keep your luggage with you and reduce the risk of losing it. It also helps you avoid checked luggage fees. Of course, it’s important to confirm carry-on dimensions with your intended airline to ensure your pack fits the bill. But then things can start to get tricky with usable space. Two bags may claim to have the same volume but offer differences in the amount of usable space they provide. Awkward designs, tapering silhouettes and rigid materials with no give to them can restrict the gear you can pack. If you want space flexibility consider expandable designs, along with options for securing larger items externally to the pack, like PALS webbing.

Aesthetics

Sure, you might be a tourist. But that doesn’t mean you want to look like one and draw unnecessary attention to yourself. The aesthetics of your travel backpack play a big role here, not to mention affecting versatility. Outdoorsy packs will look out of place in urban settings. Discreet and minimalist designs with subdued colors stand out less in a crowd. And such designs are easier to transition from a work meeting to a weekend away.

Minaal

If you need a bag for work and play, consider one that lets you stow the straps and carry it briefcase-style for a more professional look. This also helps reduce the potential for snagging when fitting the bag in overhead bins, under seats or in small vehicle trunks. A pack with a slim profile is also easier for moving through crowds with. All that being said, you should feel happy with the style of bag you’re carrying. And there’s no reason you can’t let a little bit of personality shine through in fabric or colorway choices. Just bear in mind how versatile you want that bag to be and how much you want to blend in.

Cotopaxi Allpa

Access

How easy is it to get to the main compartment for packing and retrieving gear? Clamshells or lay-flat designs are good options for being able to reach items easily throughout the main compartment. And quick-access pockets will keep essential items at the ready. Carrying tech? Dedicated easy-access storage for a laptop or tablet will come in handy too, especially for going through airport security.

Topo Designs Travel Bag

Comfort

The degree of carry comfort you require will depend on how much load you’re carrying and where you’re traveling. Some packs also come in specific men’s and women’s options to better suit different body types. But comfy padded, ergonomic shoulder straps are pretty much a requirement for any good travel pack. If you need to carry a lot of weight you may want a hip belt, load lifters and a sternum strap to help stabilize and support the load. However, hip belts do add weight and aren’t necessary for lighter loads, so you can shed weight when required by choosing a bag with a removable hip belt.

Also a breathable back panel with features such as air mesh or air vents can assist in keeping you cooler. This is particularly useful for traveling in hotter and humid climates. However, even in colder climates you’re unlikely to be able to completely avoid sweat if you’re walking around for an extended period of time with a load on your back. Being able to carry the pack as a shoulder bag or with a handle can help keep your back cooler.

Organization

If you favor packing cubes, you may prefer a main compartment with minimal interior organization. However, features such as internal dividers can help you adapt to different loads and you may still appreciate a few interior pockets for stashing smaller items. Regardless of interior organization preferences, pick a pack with at least a couple of quick-access pockets. These come in useful for storing items such as a passport, tickets, pen, wallet, phone or water bottle within easy reach so you don’t need to rummage for them and undo your careful packing. You might also want options for carrying bulky items such as sleeping mats, tripods, pouches and the like externally. If so, look for features such as external stretch pockets, attachment straps and loops or webbing to secure carabiners.

Aer Travel Pack 2

Security

You should mostly have your bag on you or close by during your travels. But opportunistic thieves may still chance their luck. Security features such as lockable zippers, anti-theft zipper loops, and discreet storage pockets for valuables can help deter them and protect your gear. Ultimately if they’re determined enough they’ll get in but such features make your bag a less appealing target and increase the chances that thieves will pass over it for an easier alternative.

But making the most of one-bag travel involves picking the right bag for your needs. The post What’s In My EDC Bag? appeared first on Carryology - Exploring better ways to carry.

]]>
Following my ‘How to pack an EDC Bag‘ article, it’s time to take a look at what I carry – I get this question a fair bit over on The Perfect Pack.

I won’t be talking so much about the actual bag itself, but my current everyday carry bag is an Alpha One Niner Chio – I’m trying something a bit different, and so far I’m pretty stoked. I’m a traditionally big EDC guy, I’m used to carrying a liter of water, food, lots of “might use” items and a bunch of “will definitely use” items.

After moving to a much smaller shoulder pack purely by chance (long story short I got sent one and I tried it once and now I can’t stop) I have severely cut down my carry.

Alpha One Niner Chio bag external velcro pocket

Let’s break it down by bag compartments.

External Velcro-lined pocket

2x ANKER USB-C / USB 3.0 cables

1x ANKER Micro-USB / USB 2.0 cables

2x Nite Ize Gear Ties

1x ANKER PowerCore Elite 20000mAh powerbank

1x Olight M2R

Alpha One Niner Chio bag velcro pocket with items

My partner and I both have USB-C phones, so the ability to charge both, with a port free, is super important in my powerbank choice. I chose Anker because of fast output, great warranty and fantastic reputation.

The Olight M2R is the best EDC flashlight I’ve ever had, I haven’t left home without it since it was released. The magnetic charging actually makes charging your flashlight fun.

The gear ties come in handy for damn near anything. So far they’ve been used for:

  • Holding phones for movie / Netflix viewing
  • Organizing power cables neatly
  • Wrapping up earphones to stop pocket gremlins
  • Temporarily blocking a garden hose
  • Towel hanger in a dodgy hotel
  • They’re an item I never forget to add to a pack.

All of these items are nicely held on with Velcro. Powerbanks don’t come with Velcro, so a handy adhesive strip of ‘hook material’ does the trick.

Cables and gear ties are held in a custom organizer made by High Range Outdoors.

External vertical zipped pockets

Alpha One Niner Chio bag vertical zip pockets

These are nifty little pockets tucked in behind the previously mentioned Velcro pocket.

In one, I have my stock earphones that came with my phone. They do the job, the inline mic never fails and they’ve taken a good beating.

The other pocket has a small ziplock bag, with business cards and stickers.

External horizontal zipped pockets

Alpha One Niner Chio horizontal zip pockets

These two are on the opposite side of the bag to the previously mentioned pockets.

Spread across the two pockets are:

1x Tom Bihn Clear Organizer Wallet

1x Rite in the Rain Notebook Cover

Inside the Tom Bihn Organizer is:

1x Sandisk Ultra Dual Drive USB Type-C

1x USB-C to Female USB 3.0 OTG

1x Tom Bihn Ultrasuede Cloth (discontinued)

Inside the Rite in the Rain cover is:

1x Lamy Safari Ballpoint

1x MIG Bolt Action Pen

1x Sharpie permanent marker

2x Rite in the Rain notebooks

Those two organizers fit super nicely in the external pockets, providing quick access if the bag is on-body, or on a desk. It just works!

Main compartment

Alpha One Niner Chio main compartment IKEA pouches

I’m a huge fan of pouches, there’s all different kinds and you’re guaranteed to find something that will suit your needs – and then you can just take it to each bag you use. Pouches are forever.

The pouches in my main compartment are:

2x IKEA FÖRFINA Pouches (with DIY zipper pulls) – I know, I know, what am I doing with IKEA pouches!? Well, these little things are absolute gold. They’re dirt cheap, and can be modded for even more modularity.

IKEA Forfina pouches

I use a red pouch for a first aid kit, and a black pouch for general small stuff I want to keep together. Everyone has different first aid needs on a daily basis (some people may have none!) so I won’t bother going through my list. The black pouch has some small goodies like:

1x humangear GoTubb with basic medicines inside it

1x BOgear Shrapsac containing chapstick, Leatherman bit kit, BIC lighter, old loyalty card wrapped in Gorilla tape and a Boker VAT

1x Sea to Summit Dry Sack

1x Clif Bar

1x Stanley 2M tape measure

Hanging 210D ripstop nylon pocket in main compartment

Alpha One Niner Chio Bag hanging 210D pocket

Inside this little pocket we have:

1x BOgear Shrapsac full of mints (discontinued product)

1x Buderim Ginger Bears

3x Moist towelette for grubby hands

I’ve also been known to throw my wallet in here occasionally.

For a bonus, my general on-body carry is a Fused Goods Bifold Gear S3 Frontier with a custom Fused Goods watch strap and a Leatherman Charge TTi in a custom leather holster.

Pocket dump leatherman charge tti fused goods bifold gear s3

My carry isn’t perfect, but it’s what works for me – I routinely change bags and carry, but when I’m not reviewing a bag the Chio will be my go-to. My total commute to work is 900 meters / 0.5 miles so right now the Chio just works, and my loadout for it hasn’t let me down yet!

The post The Best Packable Daypacks for Travel 2018 appeared first on Carryology - Exploring better ways to carry.

]]>
There are plenty of great luggage options to get your gear from plane, train or bus to your travel accommodation. But once you arrive, hauling all your gear will quickly become a hindrance to your explorations. However, this is where packable daypacks come into their own. Compact and lightweight enough to store in your luggage, these are ideal for carrying essentials so you can stay agile and explore more freely.

So what should you look for in a packable daypack?

First off, it needs to be large enough to fit everything you need it to. Also think about how much organization you’ll need. The bare minimum may be fine for some, while others will do better with plenty of pockets to keep gear tidy and accessible. In addition, while the light weight of packable daypacks means a certain trade-off in durability, you’ll still want a decent degree of durability to ensure it can withstand use in a range of environments. So keep an eye out for fabrics with tear and abrasion resistance, as well as weatherproof or water-resistant materials if you want protection from the elements or will be involved in water-based activities. And finally, while you won’t be hauling a lot of weight, if you plan to use the pack for several hours at a time consider features such as padded and wide shoulder straps, a sternum strap and waist belt to distribute the load and increase carry comfort.

So with the above in mind, we’ve rounded up some of the best packable daypacks to suit a range of budgets and travel settings…

Hey there, my family and I took a 30-day trip through Northern Italy and we did it without checking any bags. Maybe you think that sounds tricky. Well, I don’t want to spoil the ending, but it was awesome! We flew into Venice and changed towns every 3 to 6 days. If we hadn’t traveled light, it wouldn’t have been nearly as fun. So how’d we do it? What did we bring? Would we do it differently next time? Watch the video and you’ll find out.

If there’s been a trend in the past few years, it’s been modular design in carry. But what exactly does ‘modular’ mean? In essence, a ‘modular’ backpack features a range of smaller parts or modules (such as pouches) that can be used in tandem with the primary bag. The key benefit of a modular backpack is adaptability. Add modules you need and remove ones you don’t, allowing you to tailor different carry setups to different loads and environments.

In addition to the separate modules, modular design also encompasses the means by which those modules (or other gear) are secured onto or inside the bag. Think webbing, magnetic buckles, O-rings, Velcro panels and more. The possibilities are kinda endless.

And when you really get down to it, there’s two variations: external and internal. So we’re going to explore both below, and give props to the brands pushing the envelope and doing it well.

External modularity

The origins of lacing and latching modules to the exterior of a pack stem from the military’s MOLLE and PALS webbing. And nearly every ‘tactical‘ pack you’ll spot will have PALS webbing somewhere, so below we’ve chosen pieces that have done it best, and/or differently, with brands and designers introducing modular design to photography, fashion and everyday use. And those pushing past the criss-crossing of PALS and moving to magnetic connections and fully modular harness systems.

Internal modularity

Internal modularity also originated in the military with medic bags and first responders, folk who needed to carry a lot of gear, in varying formats, and access key items quickly. But now it’s commonplace in travel and everyday carry pack loadouts. In reality, any pack can have internal modularity with just the addition of pouches, but we’ve chosen the below because they’ve taken it a step further, and not only built-in internal attachment points and specialized pouch quivers, but entire modular ‘systems’.

Boundary Prima System

The Prima System includes a choice of three modular components to help you adapt to diverse carry requirements. The Prima Pack, Verge Case and Fieldspace allow the bag to function as a work bag, camera pack, daypack and more, there when you need them and removable when you want to cut carry weight.
