We all have that one type of bag that we are searching for. One that we might not know the company or name of but we have a use case in mind. And if we could design, source materials, and sew a bag we might make it for ourselves. Well, Mission Workshop has come to the rescue yet again. The Mission Workshop Transit Arkiv Laptop Brief is that bag that I wanted, thought I needed, and once I tried it, I realized I had been missing something my whole life.

Mission Workshop Transit Arkiv

The Transit Arkiv Laptop Brief comes in at 14L, smaller than a day bag. However, the layout is roomy enough to accommodate quite a lot. The Transit Arkiv is an excellent option if you need a shoulder bag for the daily commute and carry a small lunch, laptop, umbrella, snacks, raincoat, and other accessories. A multitude of pockets are built into the bag, giving the user plenty of options and organization for any use case. If you have additional bags from Mission Workshop that utilize the Arkiv system, this brief can be attached to those bags.

Mission Workshop Transit Arkiv

The organization of the bag’s interior is well thought out, with pockets and dividers galore.

I have been using the Transit Arkiv Laptop Brief for a few months now, and it fits everything I need for a workday at the coffee shop or elsewhere in town.

My usual loadout for a day like this tends to be:

  • 15″ MacBook Pro w/ charging cables
  • Wireless mouse
  • 1-2 external hard drives
  • Power bank
  • Notebook
  • Two sets of headphones (phone and computer)
  • 1-2 snack bars
  • Nalgene or Earthwell (both 32oz)

I can fit everything in and still have room to stash a light jacket or rain shell without the bag being too full. The shoulder strap is wide, and due to the bag only being 14L, it doesn’t need a pad even when fully packed. I am a huge fan of waxed canvas, so I picked up the brown waxed version for this review.

Mission Workshop Transit Arkiv

Who It Suits

The Mission Workshop Transit Arkiv Laptop Brief comes in several fabrics and colors. You have options if you are looking for a shoulder bag that can be used in an office environment or a more rugged setting. At 14 liters, you have more space than a sling, but not as much as a daypack, so consider what you would use this for and how you would travel with the bag. This is a perfect bag for your carry-on item as it fits nicely under the seat and can hold all you need on a flight. As mentioned above, this shoulder bag is perfect for everyday use as a commuter or office bag.

Mission Workshop Transit Arkiv

Who It Doesn’t

While the Transit Arkiv brief is great for commuting by public transport or your vehicle, I would not use this as a bike commuting bag unless you were to strap it to a rack. If you tend to need more for your workday or pack larger bulky lunches, you might have issues fitting everything in the bag as it is only 14L.

The Good

The layout of the pocketing and the bag’s design are exceptionally well thought out. Several zipped and drop pockets throughout the bag can house various items. You have one big roomy compartment in the interior, with one large drop pocket on one side and an admin panel opposite. The admin panel consists of two pen slots, a drop pocket that can easily fit a hard drive or power bank, and a zippered mesh pocket.

Interior organization

There is no lack of organization in the bag, which is always excellent for travel and the office. The exterior has two pockets on either end. These pockets are not big enough for a water bottle but could hold a compact umbrella, wallet, or some snack bars. There is a laptop pocket that easily fits my 15″ MacBook and should fit up to a 16″ laptop. You might think that the pocketing stops here, but you’d be wrong.

Side exterior pocket
Mission Workshop Transit Arkiv

The rear of the bag houses a small drop pocket. This can be used to house the hand strap or to keep items such as your wallet or passport close to your body. On the front of the bag, there is one full-sized drop pocket. Being that this is a large pocket, you can use it for documents, your tablet, or that delicious pita you just picked up. Finally, one small waterproof zip pocket is on the front of the bag. I found myself using this mainly for my headphones and keys as it was easy to reach and secure.

Mission Workshop Transit Arkiv

If you are a bike commuter and have a front rack on your bike, Mission Workshop has built-in detachable straps that can secure the brief to your bike for commuting.

Waxed canvas

The Transit Arkiv provides the user with a shoulder strap and two hand straps. These options were perfect for travel as the bag carries well over the shoulder while walking through the airport, but the hand straps are great for carrying the bag through the plane aisle. The rear of the bag also has webbing for attaching your brief to your luggage as you navigate the airport.

The Not So Good

The large drop pocket on the interior is somewhat flimsy. What I mean by this is that when you are filling your bag, this pocket tends to flop in the way and create more of a jumble than help organize. Personally, if this pocket was split in two and provided smaller drop pockets, this might solve this issue and help separate your items better.

Interior organization

I like that the hand straps have stow pockets for when they are not in use, but the shoulder strap is not easily detachable. This could be an issue for some who prefer not to utilize the strap. It does give the bag a cleaner look by not having buckles, but the strap can get in the way if you want to use just the hand straps. You can remove the strap, it just takes some effort.

Laptop brief

Verdict

If you’re looking for a compact, well-organized shoulder bag that will do double-duty on travel and everyday commuting, the Mission Workshop Transit Arkiv could be a great option for you. Sleek enough for the office, tough enough for travel, and easily able to accommodate your tech and essentials, this is a stylish and dependable piece for office professionals, creatives, and travelers alike.

Backpacks are considered the carry comfort kings. Duffels are the gear haulers. But when it comes to access and agility, the best messenger bags and shoulder bags step up for their time to shine. For many users, crossbody bags are go-to choices for quick access to gear on the move. They also tend to draw people who want to carry smaller loads or shed unnecessary carry bulk. And they also tend to get the nod of approval in work settings, where in many cases they bring a more formal and professional feel to your work setup than a backpack.

Best messenger bags: WP Standard Vintage Leather Messenger Bag

Messengers vs shoulder bags

So you might have heard the terms ‘messenger’ and ‘shoulder bag’ used interchangeably. But they aren’t actually the same thing. Messengers tend to be associated with more active use (think bags used by bicycle messengers), while shoulder bags play well in sedate settings. Features such as stabilizer straps are more common in messengers (again, to assist in load stability during active use). And in general messengers will wrap round the body more (a rigid design isn’t great if you’re pounding the pedals during a bike ride or trying to move nimbly in outdoor environments). That doesn’t mean you can’t use messengers in less strenuous settings or find shoulder bags that will tackle a little adventure now and then.

So with all of that in mind, what is a good brand of messenger bag? We know it can be time-consuming to search through countless bag options. So we’re shouldering the load by rounding up some of the best messenger bags and shoulder bags to suit different needs and settings. But, hey, it’s worth noting most of the below bags cross categories. They’re not only suited to certain needs, but they’re versatile too. Win!

Key Considerations When Choosing Your Bag

Ultimately, a lot of factors come into play to determine where messengers and shoulder bags will excel. Check out these tips on what to look for when choosing your ideal shoulder or messenger bag.

Style

If you need a splash of fashion with your function, you may be wondering, are messenger bags still cool? Of course they are! And are messenger bags unisex? For the most part, yes. But this incredibly popular carry category comes in a great variety of styles, colorways, and materials to cater to a wide range of tastes and needs. So to help you choose, it’s useful to think about where you’ll be using the bag.

Do you need it for work purposes? If so, is your work environment smart-casual or formal? In these cases, understated colorways like black, gray, navy, or tan will blend in better (no matter how much you may be digging that blazing orange, it’s best saved for after-work hours). Clean silhouettes or soft draping designs will also be easier to fit in formal environments than “busy” designs that draw the eye (but not for the right reasons). If you won’t be using the bag for work purposes (or your work environment is more laid-back), you’ve got a little more freedom in the style department. Yep, bring on that blazing orange…

United By Blue Lakeland Laptop Bag

Size and weight

Obviously your messenger or shoulder bag needs to be large enough to hold all the gear you need it to. But you’ll want to be careful here. The bigger the bag is, the more bulk you’ll be carrying around. Ask yourself if the added space is worth the increased weight and bulk penalty. Maybe you need it or really value the ability to accommodate a variety of loads from one day to the next. But if you tend to carry a set amount of gear, picking a bag that’s just big enough without adding unnecessary weight may be a better option.

For example, are messenger bags good for laptops? Some are much better suited to tech carry than others and will be sized accordingly to fit different devices. They may also have additional features such as padded sleeves that add to the bulk. Potentially increased size and bulk is a worthy trade-off if you regularly carry a laptop but unnecessary if you don’t.

Access

So you’ve got a bag that’s the right size and suits your style, but how about getting to your gear? One of the key advantages of messengers and shoulder bags over other types of carry is the on-body access they provide. The ability to easily swing them round to your front to get to frequently used essentials or to access gear from the main compartment without having to remove the bag from your shoulder. Features such as quick-release shoulder straps, exterior pockets, magnetic or one-handed flap buckles, and multiple access points to the main compartment will help you get to gear in a jiffy.

Durability

Are you going to be putting your bag through the wringer on regular cycle commutes? Shoving it in and out of overhead compartments or heading off into the wilderness for a day of exploring trails or outdoor photography? The more demanding you are on your bag, the tougher it will need to be. Abrasion-resistant and water-resistant materials along with trusty construction will help your bag cope when the going gets tough. Great for an EDC messenger bag that needs to endure demanding use or a travel messenger bag you can rely on to keep going strong. If your bag will be living a more relaxed or sheltered life, you can dial back on the durability, which may help you cut some weight.

Comfort

While shoulder bags and messengers don’t offer the same level of load distribution that backpacks do, they can still be comfortable to carry. Keep an eye out for a wide shoulder strap that will help spread the load a little, as well as padding on the strap to help enhance comfort. For more active use your chosen bag should offer good breathability in the back panel, a design that hugs the body, and a stabilizer strap or waist belt to help secure the load. And carry handles come in useful too when you want to give your shoulder a breather or are carrying the bag over shorter distances or in more formal environments.

We get to look at lots of fun products at Carryology, and we are often privy to exciting releases ahead of time. On rare occasions, this preview happens to come from a brand that you’ve never tested before. In this case, Wotancraft has always escaped my reach, and is a brand whose products have always intrigued me. A seemingly perfect blend of heritage aesthetic with modern guts, they are, to many, a blissful marriage of form and function. Our experienced writers Matt and Piotr have always sung their praises, and finally I have had the opportunity to use Wotancraft’s newest release–The Scout.

The Scout is dubbed as their City Explorer, and over the last ten days I’ve had a blast taking it with me everywhere. It has served me well in a surprising amount of situations, and while some elements of the bag took a little getting used to, I think that the short learning curve is worth it.

Heritage Style – Modern Materials

The first thing that anyone would notice about the Scout, and any of Wotancraft’s bags, are the looks. It’s hard not to swoon over the classic silhouettes, distressed accents, and heritage vibe. Both colours, the Charcoal with black leather that I have been using, and the Olive Green with Brown leather are handsome choices that would suit most tastes. A simple rectangular profile, with ever so slightly rounded edges (adorned with battle distress leather) and an elegant lid that closes with leather Y tabs. All of the hardware is custom, including the Wotancraft logo and name subtly embossed.

It would be easy at a glance to consider this a waxed canvas bag, and you’d be forgiven for thinking that this is an older bag that has been well loved and cared for. However, that would betray the innovative materials that hide behind its charming design. You see, the Scout is built from Waxed Cordura® Canvas. It is military grade, and is exactly what you’d choose for a hard wearing everyday bag.

On a rudimentary level this means you are getting the elegant aesthetics of waxed canvas, including the patina that will come from your own use, paired with the lightweight abrasion resistance and weatherproofing of the modern Cordura material. Wotancraft have replaced traditional waxed canvas with their own Waxed Cordura on their bags since 2014. It’s a similar story with their battle distressed leather, where the cowhide has been left rugged and untrimmed at the edges and infused with wax to create its own patina. I love this leather and I do wish they had used some of this delightful leather as zipper pulls.

Medical grade microfiber lining protects any contents from any dings or scratches, and also avoids the dreaded pilling and fuzzing that I often associate with velcro inserts. The bag’s body and the dividers are also padded with a high density EVA foam that adds structure and protection. These choices may not seem hugely significant in writing, but in the flesh they translate to a wonderful tactile experience, and give you great confidence trusting your equipment or daily carry in this bag.

EDC or Camera Carry?

The simple answer is both. While Wotancraft are perhaps better known for their photography carry capabilities, this bag serves dual purpose, and works for a roving photographer or an urban commuter. The removable dividers are equally adept at holding your camera set up or your daily carry. For example, I have often used one divider only in daily carry mode to accommodate a 26oz water bottle and a plethora of bits and pieces such as a jacket, a hat, a book and pair of glasses.

With a 9L volume, this can hold a decent amount of camera equipment. I’ve carried both my full frame set up and a more compact kit. My FF load out is usually a body, two lenses, a spare battery, a pocket rocket, and a strap. While for my smaller APSC kit, I’ve managed to easily carry two cameras, three lenses and supplement that with some extra EDC such as a water bottle or jacket. This was a welcome surprise to me, because although many bags can pitch themselves as a versatile do it all piece of carry, there often feels like a compromise on one end of the spectrum. That in itself isn’t a problem, but I prefer a bag to do one or two things well, rather than four of five things poorly. I’m happy to say the Scout is in the former camp, and genuinely does an excellent job of both.

Access

This was a bit of a learning curve for me, as I’m used to smaller messengers exposing the whole interior in an instant after you unzip or unclip. With the Scout, you have to release the pull-tabs and the covering, then unzip the main compartment. Once you’ve done that, you are presented with a concertina opening, which took me a little getting used to. However, after a couple of days, the 40º entrance is an absolute joy to use. Your contents stay protected at all times thanks to the pleated fabric and your items will not fall out easily, which was my initial concern.

It makes the bag comfortable to use on the go, in fact I found my arm, hand, and wrist entering the bag at this angle feeling far more natural than than the traditional top down method. I didn’t have to hold the bag at any particular angle to access my camera or water bottle, I could just unzip and access with the bag rested against my body. Not only that, it makes the bag great for desk or table use, you can both access and view the contents with ease. The laptop sleeve, which can be accessed from its own separate full length zipper, held my 14” MacBook Pro or my iPad Pro comfortably, and they felt very well protected.

The two front pockets are great for quick access items, I found them to be a natural spot for sunglasses, notebooks, snacks and the like. The closures are excellent designed with a finger loop behind each snap to aid easy use when full, which I find an often overlooked feature when snaps are used. It accelerates use and increases functionality, exactly what one would hope for from an everyday bag. If you are deep into the Wotancraft ecosystem, you can use their modules here to dial in your equipment carry. These pockets are also covered by the top flap when fully closed, providing extra weather protection for anything inside, along with added security.

There is a lightly padded top handle to carry briefcase style, and the shoulder strap is removable. Although, that said, I’m not sure why you would ever remove this strap as it is one of the most comfortable I have ever used. The neoprene padding moves with you on the go, and decreases shoulder fatigue significantly. On the rear of the Scout, you’ll find a luggage passthrough, which sits atop a somewhat hidden pocket that runs the full width of the bag. I found this the perfect place for my wallet, car keys, and phone. It keeps them secure against your body/back, and out of sight.

All-in-all, my first experience with Wotancraft was everything I hoped it would be, and more. As a photographer, I’m always looking for ways to use my gear quickly without shouting from the rooftops that I’m carrying an expensive payload for any would-be thieves. Not only that, I love bags that blend into surroundings, rather than standing out. I love the fusion of classic design and modern materials, complimented by the excellent functionality. I would feel comfortable taking this to either a wedding or the top of a mountain, and everywhere in between. The Scout gives you permission to do exactly that.

Greenroom136 have been in the bag-making business for a decade, honing designs that are tough, practical, and made to help you get out there. The METRORUNNER01 takes the standard Metrorunner model to the next level, decking it out with technical materials and hardware and delivering a feature-rich bag ready to tackle active use.

Factor in the value you get in return for your hard-earned and this becomes one truly epic release.

Best Active Messenger: Greenroom136 METRORUNNER01

This bag is handmade in Greenroom136’s very own Malaysian workshop and is built like a beast. Fidlock magnetic buckles, durable X-Pac fabric, and a beefy AustriAlpin Cobra buckle for the shoulder strap bring a sense of high-quality ruggedness to this bag. Speaking of the strap, it offers a wide and well-padded design for comfy carry, with a stabilizer strap when it’s time for action. The strap is ambidextrous and the Cobra buckle offers an easy way to release and secure the strap, so you can quickly access gear or adjust the bag on the fly.

Dual compartments and an assortment of pockets provide convenient organization, with a bright lining making it even easier to quickly spot and retrieve individual items. Want even more options? The Tactical version of the bag includes exterior PALS webbing too, great for securing pouches or other items you want to keep quickly accessible. And while this burly bag can haul a surprising amount, when you want to keep things lean and agile, side compression straps cinch things down neat and tidy.

Best Active Messenger: Greenroom136 METRORUNNER01

When you need a bag that can handle demanding use, embracing everything from bike rides to urban sightseeing trips and more, all while keeping gear well organized and comfy on the go, the METRORUNNER01 confidently leaps forward. Tough and versatile, it’s a dependable companion for day-to-day and adventurous use alike. Highly impressive, Greenroom136!

Highly Commended

These are the pieces that just missed out, and in most cases, by the smallest of margins. To them, we award a High Commendation. The below were of outstanding quality, displaying fine craftsmanship and design flair. With honor, we bow our heads in the utmost respect and kudos. If this were a dais, they’d be biting their teeth into silver medals, while their flags were hoisted into the horizon – a feat not to be overlooked. And we’re sure they’ll be back, to take it one notch higher, next year.

Apidura City Messenger

Apidura City Messenger

Apidura have extensive experience creating bags for bikepacking. The kind of bags that will take a beating, laugh at the elements, and keep on going strong while securely hauling your gear across the far-flung reaches of the planet. But why couldn’t that expertise be useful in an urban setting too? Turns out, it’s incredibly useful. Tough, lightweight, and waterproof, the Apidura City Messenger is built to handle whatever weather the daily grind has in store. All in a clean, urban-friendly style that sheds traditional bike messenger aesthetics for a more work-friendly look.

The slim but comfy neoprene strap lets you carry the bag high and tight and is ambidextrous to suit your carry preferences. You’ve also got flexible access, with a hook-and-loop and G-hook combo; quickly open or secure the flap throughout the day and attach the G-hook when you want a little added security on the go. The organization is simple and effective, with a zippered pocket under the flap, as well as a laptop sleeve and some slip pockets in the main compartment. The City Messenger achieves the tricky task of merging technical construction with work-appropriate functionality and style. All in a piece that moves nimbly from the bike to two feet. A refined take on a bike-friendly work messenger, it’s a solid choice for daily commutes and bike trips about town. Inspiring work, Apidura!

Ally Capellino Kenny

Ally Capellino Kenny

Bike carry and fashion-forward aesthetics don’t often go together. But Ally Capellino asks the simple question, “Why not?” Followed up with the simple and elegant Kenny satchel. Built with lightweight durability and weather protection in mind, the bag features water-resistant Cordura© nylon and bridle leather details for that luxurious touch. A weatherproof quick-access pocket provides handy storage for small essentials, while interior pockets provide options to store tech (ideally in a sleeve) and other work or EDC items.

While the shoulder strap isn’t the traditional messenger-style design, it’s comfortable and adjustable, allowing you to easily move between shoulder bag or cross-body carry. Suavely functional, the Kenny offers a classy take on a daily commuting bag. Creating a piece that can move from the bike to the boardroom is no easy feat, but Ally Capellino have done it with this stylish satchel. Great work!

Trakke is a brand that needs no introduction. Based in Scotland, the small team has been producing some of the best heritage products on the planet and quickly rose to the top of the best carry brands out there thanks to incredible materials, impeccable build quality, and timeless aesthetics.

I was fortunate enough to try out some of the brand’s products, such as the Kelso sling and Bannoch backpack, and was very impressed by impeccable craftsmanship, the materials, and simple utilitarian design. Today I would like to shine more light on the Wee Lug – a messenger bag that has just received an incredible upgrade with AustriAlpin Cobra buckles.

Read on to find out what makes this bag special.

Trakke Wee Lug Cobra

Who It Suits

  • Anyone looking for an EDC messenger bag
  • Those who appreciate heritage aesthetics and timeless, durable materials
  • Minimalists who prefer simple, functional bags over something jam-packed with features

Who It Doesn’t

  • Those seeking the lightest bag might find the Trakke Wee Lug Cobra on the heavier side. But this is to be expected from superb materials and best-in-class hardware used on the bag.
  • Handmade in Scotland with the best materials and hardware out there comes with a hefty price tag.
Trakke Wee Lug Cobra

About The Bag

Price: 250 GBP

Dimensions: 30 x 54 x 17 cm

Weight: 1.4 kg

Capacity:  20L

Trakke Wee Lug Cobra

Interestingly enough, the Wee Lug has been part of the Trakke product line since the very inception of the brand. The idea of a simple messenger materialized in a two-pocket bag built in a living room from reclaimed materials (as with all the Trakke products back in the day). That was 2010. Since then Trakke has been meticulously perfecting this bag, taking it through a wild journey of different designs, shapes, and materials.

In 2012 the brand made big changes and shifted from reclaimed materials to British-made waxed canvas that has become synonymous with Trakke. It is then the MK1 version of the Wee Lug was born with a complete redesign centered around local bike messengers, following with MK2 in 2016 and finally MK3 in 2019.

Every version of the Wee Lug has gathered critical acclaim and won awards as the best messenger bag. So changing things up is a risky endeavor. Why fix what isn’t broken? But Trakke, being Trakke, managed to find a way to take an already iconic bag to the next level by upgrading the standard metal buckles to AustriAlpin Pro Cobra buckles.

At first glance, it does not seem like a big change. Sure, it adds 100 points to the badassery of the bag. But in reality, this upgrade is far from just cosmetic. Cobra buckles are very easy to open and when you close the buckle there is no better or more satisfying “click” known to man.

Trakke Wee Lug Cobra

Comfort

The Trakke Wee Lug Cobra offers a wide, robust strap that does not have much padding but manages to be quite comfortable. Of course, inherently messenger bags are less comfortable than backpacks simply because the weight is not distributed on two shoulders. But as far as messengers go, the Wee Lug is damn great. My typical loadout includes:

– MacBook Air M1

– Remote Equipment org kit for cables, dongles, and chargers

– Tom Bihn Side Kick for documents, passports, wallet

– 32 oz Nalgene bottle

– Uniqlo Ultra Light Down jacket for unpredictable weather

Trakke Wee Lug Cobra

With all these things inside, the bag sits comfortably on my body and is a joy to carry.

The top grab handle is very cleverly implemented. Instead of sticking on top of the bag like a sore thumb, it is sewn on the back of the bag, which adds to the clean aesthetics but does come with a small trade-off – the center of gravity shifts when picking up the bag.

Grab handle

One thing I found missing however is the stabilization strap. Sure, they are still available for purchase on the Trakke website but with messenger bags in general they are a must and should be included out of the box. The Wee Lug’s design always had bike messengers in mind and if you’ve ever ridden a bike with a messenger bag you know how it tends to shift its position to the side. Securing it with a stabilizer strap becomes a necessity and I feel like it’s an omission not to add this strap as part of the default configuration.

Design and Features

What I love about Trakke is that there are zero gimmicks with their products. The team focuses on the essentials and perfects them to make everyday interaction a joy for many years to come.

The design and features complement each other perfectly. The clean lines on the outside work well with a simple internal layout.

The concealed grab handle is great and sits pretty flush against my back, I don’t even notice it.

The front flap conveniently covers two quick-access pockets with vertical zips. These are barely noticeable but can be reached when slinging the bag to the front.

Front pocket access

The bright orange liner is simply gorgeous and quickly became my favorite ever. Unlike most of the companies that put a cheaper material on the inside, Trakke has spared no expense and made the inside of the bag equally durable, high quality, and gorgeous as the outside using the same dry-waxed canvas they are famous for.

Orange interior

The standout feature of this version of the Wee Lug is of course the AustriAlpin Pro Style Cobra buckles. These are simply the world’s strongest, most durable and I dare say the most badass-looking buckles known to man. Made in Austria, their original purpose is to ensure the highest safety for mountain climbers. But I am glad these made their way to bags. Is it overkill to put on a messenger bag? Most definitely. Is there cooler hardware you could use instead? Nope. Even Fidlock magnetic buckles (that are more convenient in day-to-day use thanks to magnets) bite the dust compared to Cobras.

My Wee Lug came with a whopping four Cobra buckles – three 25mm versions (two on front buckles and one for securing the stabilization strap that Trakke was kind enough to include with my unit) and one 45mm for the main strap. Warning, the distinct clicking sound of the Cobra buckle is addicting!

Cobra buckles

Materials and Organization

Trakke is using some of the best dry-waxed canvas on the market. As a result, the look and feel of all their products are second to none. With a distinct heritage vibe, yet unmistakably modern these materials are a joy to use and interact with on a daily basis.

As mentioned already, Trakke has used the same materials both on the inside and outside of the bag, which is a testament to their commitment to quality. Not only do they look damn cool and are extremely durable and pleasant to the touch but waxed canvas also offers excellent water resistance, so your precious items are safe from the elements.

The YKK AquaGuard zippers prevent moisture from seeping in. They are black, stealthy, and smooth as butter. The zipper pull is the black metal ring feature on most Trakke products. It reminded me a bit of Barbour metal rings, though definitely lighter and thinner.

Waxed canvas

Coupled with the Cobra buckles every single material and hardware used on the Wee Lug is simply outstanding. I honestly can’t imagine it getting any better than this.

The organization is simple and effective – technically inside the bag, the two front pockets under the flap are accessible from the outside.

Inside there is:

  • A long zipper covering the laptop compartment, it’s quite generous and I imagine it would fit a 16-17 inch laptop depending on the model
  • Medium-sized zippered compartment for valuables such as a wallet, passport, etc.
  • Two water bottle pockets that could be used to hold anything from a laptop charger to a small umbrella. When not in use they can be quite flush and unobtrusive
  • Generous cavern of the main compartment

It might not seem like much, but this type of minimalist organization is my favorite. There are no excess pockets and the bag perfectly fits my existing selection of pouches and organizers. Simply put, I would not have it any other way.

Trakke Wee Lug Cobra

The Good

  • Absolutely incredible build and materials – the Wee Lug is a clear example of what the best of the industry has to offer
  • AustriAlpin Cobra buckles look amazing but it is the daily use that is most impacted. Compared to the stock metal hardware Cobra buckles are almost effortless to open and with some practice can be closed one-handed.
  • The gorgeous bright inner liner is something out of this world. When most of the companies generally put cheaper materials on the inside, Trakke has cut no corners here and put as much love and attention into the inside as on the outside of the bag.
  • The simple, thoughtful organization is just enough to keep yourself organized while not being overwhelmed with pockets and numerous compartments.

Not So Good

  • The stabilization strap is not provided out of the box and has to be purchased separately. Perhaps not all backpacks need a sternum strap, but the stabilizer on the messenger is a must and I find it odd that it’s missing in the default configuration.
  • Metal Cobra buckles, waxed canvas all over the bag, and robust construction mean that the bag is on the heavier side, with similarly sized synthetic alternatives weighing half as much.
  • Waxed canvas would require some maintenance to look clean, especially if you choose a black color. Don’t expect your bag to look pristine if you plan to use it often. Dust and lint will, unfortunately, follow you around.
Trakke Wee Lug Cobra

Verdict

It’s one of those things that most of us dream of but few can afford. Anyone would absolutely be delighted to own the Trakke Wee Lug Cobra or have it gifted. It has a timeless look that equally suits a college professor, an engineer, or a top manager – the Wee Lug is beyond categorization to a specific group of people. It is simply an outstanding product that would spark joy in daily use for decades to come, a piece I would love to pass down to my son when he grows up. Not many material things out there inspire me to share with my son and the Wee Lug is a rare gem that I hope stays in the family for generations to come.

Considering this, the asking price of 250 GBP is more than fair and reasonable. At the same time, this is unmistakably a premium product that is worth every penny you invest in it.

I can highly recommend the Trakke Wee Lug Cobra as the ultimate everyday messenger to any demographics, profession, or lifestyle. And frankly, I’m very curious to see how the Trakke team would take this bag even further with future iterations. For now, I can say that I’ve found my perfect messenger bag.

There are behemoths out there. Brands that don’t need an introduction and are known even outside of the carry community due to the sheer amount of marketing, product placement, powerful stories or simply for being around as long as we can remember. For instance, Samsonite is over a century old and has long become synonymous with large suitcases. It makes billions in revenue and employs over 14k people. There are smaller brands such as Mystery Ranch, JanSport, Tom Bihn, and Timbuk2 that have been around for decades and have less headcount but still make millions of dollars each year.

And then there are tiny companies that fight their way into the oversaturated market. Trying to make a difference, innovate and reach the hearts of us, regular consumers. One such brand is Greenroom136. This small Malaysia-based bag maker has been making waves in the carry world since its inception in 2011. GR136 was founded by Patrick Lim. A carry geek who quit his job at Apple and pursued the dream of making Malaysia a country famous for awesome bags.

As a result, a small, tight lineup was created spearheaded by the Metromonger. This oversized sling took the market by storm, quickly becoming one of the most successful products released by GR136.

I had the pleasure of testing an updated version of the Metromonger (dubbed Metromonger Prime or Metromonger01) over the course of six weeks, exploring new locations in Turkey, taking it as my carry-on luggage on the plane, and repurposing it as my main drone carry.

Does the bag make meaningful improvements over the previous version? Can it hold its own in a very crowded sling market? Should you consider the Greenroom136 Metromonger Prime as your bag?

Read on to find out.

Who It Suits

Those who seek a compact office carry would appreciate the dedicated laptop compartment that tightly fits up to a 13-inch compact laptop (such as MacBook Air 13/MacBook Pro 13).

Anyone looking for a durable bag that can be abused without holding yourself back – the Metromonger can take it.

If you are looking for the best build, materials, and hardware, yet not ready to rob the bank. GR136 products are fabled to be priced very competitively. And the Metromonger Prime is no exception.

If you like personalizing and customizing your bags – a bag builder allows you to make the bag unique. Even without investing in customization, out of the box you have a Velcro area on the front of the bag allowing you to attach a funky morale patch and express your vibrant character.

Who It Doesn’t

If you need the bag immediately you should keep in mind that these are built to order with production leads often exceeding three weeks (“thanks” to COVID), so if waiting is not an option you might need to look elsewhere.

Despite the price of the actual bag being more than reasonable, be prepared to add extra for shipping from Malaysia.

To some degree, owners of the larger thicker laptops might still fit their computers in the main compartment but it would eat away most of the available space (especially if the laptop is in a case). If you have a larger laptop there is a high chance that it simply won’t fit.

Design

Looks

The Greenroom136 Metromonger Prime is a rectangular 10L sling but I would argue that it is a mini messenger rather than a sling. Compared to the original version of the bag, the Prime looks more refined and mature. Gone are the rain flaps from the top and front compartment. The logo is now a more subtle blacked-out version that does not stick out too much. A Velcro strip has replaced the row of MOLLE to allow customization of the bag.

The Metromonger is a simple bag. But built with purpose and function in mind.

Construction

Burly and built like a tank. These were my initial thoughts upon unpacking the bag. They were only reinforced after six weeks of regular use. I like when I don’t have to be gentle with my bags and the Metromonger was definitely not asking for careful treatment. Even after my travels and regular use, I have not seen any signs of use. It looks practically brand new and I expect it to hold its look for a long time.

Materials & Hardware

Greenroom136 did not skimp on the materials here.

Dimension Polyant X50 MultiCam is a high-performance fabric that is extremely durable, abrasion-resistant, water-resistant, and just badass-looking. The matte Cordura face looks and performs brilliantly.

Based on the overwhelming feedback received from the community, Greenroom136 introduced a new inner liner made from 420D Gold Oxford Nylon ripstop. It looks incredible and adds visibility to the main compartment that was lacking previously.

The main buckle on the shoulder strap is a plastic Cobra GT. It’s fun and easy to operate, while adding to the badassery of the bag.

The shoulder strap uses an industrial-grade safety belt capable of withstanding up to a 1000kg load while being silky smooth to the touch.

The YKK zippers throughout are smooth and burly. One infamous thing about these specific zippers on GR136 products – they are extremely loud. Unless you want a constant jiggle and clanging of your zippers, be prepared to install paracord zipper pulls. Or add them at GR136 when ordering the bag. Some owners even went for the extreme solution of clipping those loud metal pullers off. I personally wouldn’t go that far but do strongly recommend silencing the zippers as soon as you can.

The magnetic Fidlock buckle to secure the stabilizer strap is secure and effortless in daily use. More bag makers should take note and start introducing such buckles instead of the standard plastic Duraflex ones seen on the majority of bags.

All in all, the Metromonger has an outstanding build and the choice of materials is excellent but does come with a tradeoff – the Metromonger is not the lightest 10L bag out there.

Features

The Greenroom136 Metromonger Prime looks simple but it packs in a number of cool, useful features such as:

Quick-release shoulder strap with Cobra GT buckle

Magnetically secured stabilizer strap (Fidlock, baby!)

Dedicated padded laptop compartment lined with signature corduroy fabric – I have not seen corduroy used on any other bag.

Simple yet efficient internal organization with multiple flat pockets to keep your things neat and organized

Front pocket with its own volume and even included key ring

Durable and comfortable top grab handle – a godsend for any bag larger than 3L

Bottom compression straps allow securing a jacket, tripod, umbrella, or yoga mat if you really want to push the bag’s limit

The front Velcro panel is subtle yet grants a degree of personalization with morale patches

Performance

Space and Access

At 10L the Metromonger offers a surprising amount of space. Mainly thanks to the generous main compartment as well as a front pocket with its independent volume. Even when the main compartment is full you can still comfortably use the front pocket. Not something many bags can claim.

The top compartment and laptop compartment offer two zippers each which allow you to configure on which side you wish to open/close the compartment. Convenient, especially considering that the shoulder strap is interchangeable and compatible for both right and left-handed users. The front compartment closes with a single zip.

Pockets and Organizing

There are essentially three compartments in the Greenroom136 Metromonger Prime:

  1. Laptop compartment with just a space for your trusty computer, no additional organization
  2. The main compartment has a large document pocket and two gadget-size pockets. (These pockets were great for storing my DJI Mini 2.)
  3. The front compartment features a plastic key loop, two pen slots, and two more pockets for small bits and pieces.

Comfort

The bag features an incredibly comfortable, generously padded mesh back panel and wide ambidextrous shoulder strap that has a stabilizer strap out of the box. This harness is by far superior to any sling I have tried and is more comfortable than many messengers I’ve had so far.

Weatherability

Made out of Dimension Polyant X50 MultiCam fabric, not only is the Metromonger a stunning bag to look at, but it is also extremely weather-resistant. The #10 YKK zippers are not AquaGuard but still weather-resistant, just make sure they are zipped shut. The zipper heads are quite chunky and can leave a noticeable gap if not carefully closed.

Alternatives to Consider

Life Behind Bars Slingshot 9L: another offering from South East Asia, this ultra-minimal and affordable bag fits a 13-inch laptop and some extras. It has a Fidlock slide closure, durable materials, included stabilizer strap, and a sleek look. Made in Jakarta, Indonesia, by a small passionate team, it is a more affordable alternative to the Metromonger but does not fit as much stuff inside and can’t beat the Metromonger’s harness and overall carry comfort.

Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L: a compact offering that fits a 13-inch laptop. Peak Design’s bread and butter is creating solutions to safely carry camera gear and this sling is no exception. Similarly priced to the Metromonger, this sling has a stealthy look but does not come with a stabilizer strap.

Dakine WRKSHP Kellett Bag 10L Bag Vx21: part of the experimental WRKSHP collection, the Kellett has multiple carry modes (briefcase, shoulder bag, sling, hip bag) and incredible materials but does not fit a laptop, instead geared towards carrying a tablet.

The Good

Excellent build and materials – this bag can take a beating and laugh in the face of abuse

At roughly $187, it is great value for the superb materials and hardware you get

A dedicated laptop sleeve makes the Metromonger a solid laptop bag assuming your machine fits the dimensions of the pocket

I personally found the Metromonger an excellent alternative to my stock drone case (DJI Mini 2)

Balanced, thoughtful internal organization

Gorgeous high-visibility gold interior

Not So Good

Jiggly out of the box, absolutely requires zipper pulls or another way of silencing the metal zipper pullers on the bag

Tightly fits compact 13-inch laptops but most thicker/larger laptops won’t be accommodated

The production lead time is three weeks, sometimes more. Be prepared to wait until your bag reaches you

Not the lightest 10L bag mainly due to the robust harness system and burly materials

Verdict

GR136 products have firmly established themselves as an incredible value proposition and the revised Metromonger is no exception. The idea was simple – take the most popular bag in the lineup and make it better. With a streamlined design, improved inner liner, and generally superb materials used, the Greenroom136 Metromonger Prime is noticeably better than the original Metromonger. Together with the excellent harness system, spacious main compartment, high-visibility inner liner, and useful internal organization the Metromonger Prime stands tall even in the crowded sling/messenger market.

It is important to note that the improvements made to the Metromonger that resulted in the Prime edition were mostly taken from community feedback and wishes shared with Patrick Lim. It is valuable and appreciated to have the bag maker listen to the community and take the product to the next level.

Consider whether you are fine with the production lead time of three weeks and waiting for the bag to be shipped from Malaysia to your current location (total wait time might be over one month). If so, the Greenroom136 Metromonger Prime is an outstanding, comfortable, and badass bag to accompany you on many adventures.
